  • Updated "RTA Courses" category to "Individual Courses (RTA)" to better define the category—it remains under Full Game to mirror a full game of an individual course timed externally. Score/time attack (internal counters/times) on courses will remain under Levels.

  • Updated Mt. Snow category RTA timing start, as per below. Both runs on the leaderboard have been retimed to reflect this change.

——You can use a completed save file to attempt this category, just walk back over to the gate and follow the RTA timing below. You can also use a file that is still "gold badge" meaning your progress was saved without beating the Snow King (i.e., if you reset during an attempt)—in this case, you will be put right outside the gate on starting your save.

RTA Timing (NOTE—Updated 11/26/2023):

  • Timing starts on the input for selecting "Yes" on the pop-up that says "Are You Ready?" at the talking gate to Mt. Snow.
  • Timing ends on the ball going into the hole on Mt. Snow hole 9.

Since discovering the second iteration fixed shift, the community (thanks ddeeffgg, Friskiest, Mrs. Chippy and others) has fully shelled out all mishit patterns in the first iteration of a course. There are four possible seeds to know every hole's tee shot's accuracy within a certain range (i.e., roughly 1/4 of the width of the red zone/risk area at full power) based on the mishit you get on the first hole's tee shot. We do not have a comprehensive or easily accessible way to learn how second shot accuracies work, though we believe they will likely mirror v1.1.0 where they were determined by a ) pin location, b ) landing area radius, and c ) surface type of the ball's lie. Thus, it's unlikely without many hours of tiresome work that we can put together a visual guide with consistent second shots based on seed + pin location + landing spot. Good grief, what a task that would be lol.

The guide has been posted! Note that it is single line per seed, and we have a notepad-friendly compact version pinned in the #routing channel in the Discord. These mishit patterns are only present in v4.0.0, which is the quasi-final update to the game.

Definitely a game changer for course speedrunning in score attack :)

As of this week, it was found that since v1.1 of the game removed deterministic accuracy, we finally have figured out somewhat how the accuracy mechanic functions now. We're able to say that the accuracy on teeshots and possibly second shots in some scenarios depends fully on stroke count and the iteration of the course you're on. By iteration, I mean how many times you've "restarted from hole 1" after first entering the course.

Every single iteration of a course has the same pattern attributed to it. The notes on the first iteration patterns will be refined and posted as a concise guide here on src/mgsr under guides, once finished. Third iteration and after seem to be relatively unimportant as they offer nothing significant for the amount of time spent to get to them, nor are any good for score attack records.

The weirdness comes from the second iteration, aka restarting from hole 1 once. This costs about 6.5 seconds and does the following: EVERY single teeshot will have the hardest left mishit (right if playing as a lefty), EVERY second shot will have the furthest right mishit, and the third shots will all have some left mishit that is mostly unimportant. The importance of this is that a hard left mishit also maximizes distance, which means that some shortcuts barely possible before are now 100% accessible given good weather. Provided you know exactly how to play a given wind direction with your shot's lie and the known mishit on the frame of power you hit, you could hole out a significant number of times. Yeah, I know, this is utterly ridiculous lol.

I'm not really sure how to go about this on the leaderboard altogether, as a lot of people have worked hard with the presumably random accuracy in mind. For All Courses, it functions as a safety method as using it on all 6 courses will basically eliminate chances of WR already without holing out 12-15 times. For All Birdies, it provides significant timesaves and possibly requires a reroute for playing from Bonny front tees and Rookie tees of other courses. For Score/Time Attack, it could be worth having a column or other descriptor that delineates between this bug abuse and natural/risk mitigation play, as score attack records are bound to be beaten with this method eventually. Let me know your thoughts if you have any on the topic!

Update:

It has come to our attention that there is explicit evidence that a round on a course was done in Solo Challenge, which is when the stats show up after finishing the 18th hole and before the scorecard pops up. This only requires a single screenshot for proof!

Thus, accordingly, the game rules have been updated to reflect this opportunity. You now no longer need a capture card to submit a score attack or time attack record, whether it's your best round or a world record! All you need to do to submit your best rounds is include the image showing the stats page, like this example: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/812813991658258512/945277880764616764/FKls_vaXsAIc_92.png Of course, we would love to see your full round if you have the capability to record it, and it would also still be cool to include a screenshot of the scorecard in addition to the stats page for information; however, neither are no longer necessary!

This will work for score or time attack submissions. For the lowest putts category, please also include the scorecard for verification.

If you don't know, we do host score and time attack recordkeeping here, which you can find by clicking the Leaderboards drop-down menu and going to Level Leaderboards or any of the levels in the list!

Howdy friends,

I finished writing up a fully-fleshed out guide with tons of information and some supplementary screenshots (not to the degree of zooming in and circling specific things, but enough lol).

If you find you learn best through text, I hope this resource can benefit you alongside the announcement of the $1100 bounty (check the news post!).

You can find it under guides, or a direct link here: https://www.speedrun.com/mgsr/guide/rz0nc

Let me know in replies here if there's anything additional you'd like me to attempt to cover or clarify. Thanks!

Howdy speedfolks,

v2.0.0 is out! And is leaving a lot of us distraught. Unfortunately, Camelot has left us out to dry on the road, as the bandaid of deterministic accuracy has been ripped clean off. All accuracy is now completely random in every mode and seemingly not dependent on any controllable and/or environmental factors.

This means we are now seeing fully the effect mishits have in terms of distance variation. Hard left mishits with Superstar Bowser can result in over 30 yards overhit, while hard right mishits shunt the distance a fair amount (the diagonal top of the power meter is how this works).

Nonetheless, the leaderboards have been fully updated now and will support future courses added per version in terms of All Courses, All Courses—Time Attack, Speed Golf and IL categories. All of these categories in terms of New Donk City have been updated, so feel free to start trying runs! You might find it a lot more challenging if you depended on the known mishits (the guide has been marked as outdated, lol).

Minnesota, USABluekandy2 years ago

Game Rules have been updated to reflect this:

Regarding IL times/scores: IL categories allow for submissions that use the Switch video capture function (press and hold the capture button) to record the last 30 seconds of a submission that must include the following:

  • Last hole being played and finished
  • Ending scorecard visible showing hole order and score or time (record the last 30 seconds from when this is visible)

Submissions with only the Switch capture function as evidence will be limited to outside of the top 5 scores/times at the time of submitting to discourage any meaningful cheating.

Hi MG:SR fans,

GMeister recently brought up an issue regarding motion control runs of full-game categories outside Speed Golf (All/Unlock All Courses). It seems motion users have issues getting Joycons to connect a significant amount of the time from the menu before the character select screen. As such, timing rules for Button and Motion Controls have been updated, per the category rules for these two categories:

RTA Timing:

Timing begins on the input to select "Button Controls" through Solo Challenge if playing with those. Timing begins on the input after your joycons have connected after selecting "Motion Controls" if using those.

RTA ending time has not been effected for either category.

All current runs of button and motion controls in these categories have already been retimed.

Howdy, from the MG:SR SRC team!

For very common speedrunning questions about this game, please refrain from posting individual threads in the forum—reference game/category rules and the #faq channel in the Discord server (join link on the left-hand side of this page!) first.

The Discord server has a speedrunning hub section in it, which has the #faq channel, a general speedrunning channel, and routing and glitch-hunting channels for those interested in those components of speedrunning. Feel free to post routing ideas and potential glitches in this forum as well as in the server. You can share your MG:SR speedrun streams in the content section and show us your PBs and best shots in the highlights channel!

This community encourages the use of on-pace notifications for speedrunners of this game. The Discord server has a dedicated #on-pace channel and an opt-in on-pace role for users to ping when they can share someone's stream when they are on WR or PB pace, so that the community can pile in and support while seeing history be made.

Full-game categories: All Courses—beat all courses in Solo Challenge (probably using score attack, as it is much faster) as fast as possible. This is best run as a new-game+ category (NG+). You only need to complete New Donk City and Shelltop Sanctuary once, either on amateur or pro. You can do "No DLC" on any version of the game, but v1.1 and v1.0 are the optimal choices due to deterministic accuracy in those versions. "DLC" stands for the full list of DLC courses included in free updates, so far ending in v4.0 (11 courses). If more courses are added later on, runs in the "DLC" category will be moved to the misc. obsolete all courses category for speedrun history preservation :)

RTA Courses, Button/Motion Controls—stands for "Real Time Attack." Our closest match to the older Mario Golf games' speedgolf modes, but timed externally (i.e., Livesplit). Play through an individual course using the Score Attack mode in Solo Challenge as fast as possible with any character and club set.

All Birdies—achieve the All Birdies medal from a new-game save file, visible on the main menu. This can be done through any mode that works toward the medal unlock.

Story Mode Any%—beat the story mode from a new story mode save file.

All Medals—obtain all 5 medals seen on the main menu from a new-game save file. This is done by completing the following: Story Mode Any%, all One-On-One-Putt challenges (Solo Challenge), getting 800+ points on all 3 Target Golf courses (Solo Challenge), All Birdies (any mode), and achieving super star clubs with every character (3000+ points). This could take well over 10 hours to do, so plan accordingly. It's a terrible meme category due to the superstar clubset grind! There are a variety of ways to do this quickly though, so try it out if you dare.

Misc: Story Mode 100%—beat the story mode from a new story mode save file while also completing all side challenges and buying all stock from every pro shop.

Misc: Unlock All Courses—from a new save file: in Solo Challenge, starting with Bonny Greens, unlock the remaining unlockable four courses by beating up through Wildweather Woods.

Misc: All Courses—Time Attack—All Courses, but strictly using the Time Attack mode of Solo Challenge. Here, your best club with Super Star characters is a 5W, so routing per hole is different already; furthermore, you gotta run. Some characters that float or have good special dashes and speed may be of consideration... You can do "No DLC" on any version of the game, just note that with more courses added in future updates, there will be a bit more menuing in course select depending on your route.

Misc: Mt. Snow—from a new-game+ save of Story Mode, complete the Mt. Snow segment through hole 9 (the Snow King fight is not part of this category). This category allows you to flex your up-to-level 100 Mii and any clubs you'd like to use (lobs included, lol) while strategizing how best to deal with Wario and Waluigi's shenanigans.

Misc: One-On-One-Putt—complete all 5 challenges, in any order, in the one-on-one-putt mode through Solo Challenge. This is best done when already having unlocked all of the challenges.

IL categories: Score Attack, Button/Motion Controls—play for the lowest score on an individual course using the Score Attack Mode in Solo Challenge. Button and Motion controls are separate categories.

Time Attack, Button/Motion Controls—play for the quickest time on an individual course using the Time Attack Mode in Solo Challenge. Button and Motion controls are separate categories. Routing stamina and speed (and obstacle navigation!) makes this category fairly complex to optimize across three different tiers of strength, control and spin.

Lowest Putts—play a full round of a course through Solo Challenge while aiming to take as few putts as possible (shots on the green, effectively).

Thanks for reading! Let us know if you have any questions or feedback, feel free to post here in the forum as well :D

This post serves as central information to the MGTT Any% WR bounty, and will be continually updated with news on the topic.

Announced alongside EZScape's charity speedrunning competition (MGTT Any% raffle through 8/9/20, see the discord's announcements channel for info), this bounty is for the first person to take the Any% WR (NTSC) from me at any given point, meaning it extends indefinitely from this date onward. I may continue to run the category and update my own WR, but I am exempt from the bounty—and with the way golf works, the category will NEVER be fully optimized RTA, so there is always the possibility to win the bounty.

It is expected you stream a majority of your progress, as something of this scale will require ample scrutiny to ensure legitimacy of the record. You must follow all game and category rules, and you must do your run on any of the acceptable platforms to run on. You do not need to stream every moment you play the game, just use common sense. After all, I would've lost interest by this point in my grinding the game if I didn't have the wonderful MGTT community to spend time with during it. I want to make it clear that this should never, in any way, become a negatively-impactful or stressful event for anyone. This bounty exists entirely for the fun along the way, the respect for progress, and the opportunity to meet new people and form strong friendships. I know, from my point of view, that that is an infinitely true and irreplaceable experience for me. But, enough rambling...

Now for the goods: this post will be continually updated with the current pot bonus that is being pledged altogether from invested community members (please feel free to join in if you want to see this happen! WR contention at the top level is highly enjoyable and entertaining. Any amount is welcome. You can announce it publicly if you choose, or you can DM me or another admin of the MGTT Discord server). It will be updated as it changes. During the beginning of this challenge, I expect it to change somewhat dramatically, as it already has. Here's the history for the total amount so far, alongside total contributors toward it, subject to change (topmost entry is the current bounty):

7/2/20: $1000 - 4 total contributors pledged 6/30/20: $425 - 3 total contributors pledged, first announced

If you have any questions or want to contribute, feel free to respond here, ask in the MGTT discord, or DM me or any admin of the server! Thanks for your time, and good luck with the competition!

Current Any% Route as of 1/2/19

Feel free to pull from these strats, add onto here in the forum, or create a text file of this to use during your runs. Ace strats make everything more exciting!

Important: These strats are for NTSC-J, and may not work on NTSC-U or PAL versions of the game.

Par 3s are only teeshots, whereas Par 4s have a specified teeshot that, in most cases, applies to both pin locations. The strats are made this way for runners' convenience in being able to discern which pin location they have on a given hole after having made the teeshot.

If you manage to get 4 strats in a run with hole 9 eagle (or 5 strats without), you can skip holes 13, 16 and 17. If you get 6 strats with hole 9 eagle (or 7 without), you can skip 13, 14 and 17.

Legend: Teeshot: (Hole) - [(up/down)club - power shot] impact point @ mark on power meter, mishit, spin Second shot, if applicable: (Flag location/yardage) - [(up/down)club - power shot] impact point @ mark, mishit, spin ^1W | v3W = club up or down from current club to this club +1%/-1% = Shot distance variation AA - topspin, AB - super topspin, BB - backspin, BA - super backspin Hook - late mishit past sweetspot Slice - early mishit Full - full power 1/2, 3/4 - quarter segments along the power meter (green/blue markers) (number)F - number frames to mishit by, from full power, a quarter segment or from the sweetspot (each mark along the power meter is a frame, each quarter segment is 15 marks long)

They are generally a list of strats that do not require you to club up in addition to making a double frame perfect shot. For the faster strat alternatives on some holes, continue on below.

1 [fastest]: (1W-P) T Full, AB left - (^1W-P) T +2F from 1/2, 1F slice AB if teeshot -1F: (^3I) T +3F from 3/4, AB if teeshot 1F slice: (^4I) T +3F from 3/4, 1F hook AB right - (^1W) T +7F from 1/2, 1F hook BA or: (^3W) T -3F from 3/4, 2F hook AA if you miss the driver if teeshot -1F: (6I) T -1F, 1F slice if teeshot -1F, 1F slice: (6I) T -2F, 1F slice OR (6I) T -1F, 1F slice BA

2 [fastest]: (1W) T Full AA 366 - (^1W) T -3F from 3/4 if teeshot -1F: (^1W) T -3F from 3/4, 1F slice BA 371 - (^1W) T -2F from 3/4, BB

alt 2 [fastest for missed full power teeshot]: (1W) T -1F, 1F hook AB 366 - (^1W) T -2F from 3/4, AA 371 - (^1W) T +1F from 3/4, BB

3 [fastest]: 139 - (^1W) TR +1F from 1/2, 2F hook AB (+1% = 1F hook, no spin) or: TR 1/2, 1F hook AA rain: T -1F from 1/2, 1F hook 144 - (^1W) TR +2F from 1/2, AB or: TL +3F from 1/2, 1F hook rain: TR +2F from 1/2, 4F slice; TL +3F from 1/2, 2F hook A/BB

alt 4 [back flag]: (1W) T Full, 2F slice | T -1F, 2F slice AA 377 - (3W) T Full, 1F hook AB

alt 6: (1W-P) T Full, 2F slice AB 381 - (3I) T -4F, AA 393 - (^1W) T +2F from 3/4, 1F hook AB

  • use this in conjunction with the other strat for teeshot safety—either 1F or 2F slice on teeshot gives eagle strats!

alt 7 [fastest]: 123 - (^1W) T +6F from 1/2, 1F hook AA rain: T +4F from 1/2, 1F slice BB 144 - (^1W) T +1F from 3/4, 2F hook AB rain: T +1F from 3/4, 3F hook AB [same strat, 1 more hook]

8: (1W) T -2F, AA 354 - (3I) M Full or T -1F, 2F hook AB 356 - (3I-P) T -6F (this also works with teeshot -3F, AB)

  • ±% on the teeshot -> for -1%, do AB instead of AA. for +1%, do no spin. These alts will have a 50% or so success rate on the above strats.

alt 10 [for front flag]: 358 teeshot => 2nd shot: 1F hook BB => (1W) +2F 3/4 AA -1F => (1W) +1F 3/4 AB 1F slice BB => (1W) +1F 3/4 AA

11: (1W) T Full, 1F hook AB 317 - (^3I) T +2F from 3/4, BA [alt to the 7I strat] 330 - (5I) T -4F, AB

alt 11: (1W) T Full, 2F hook AB 317 - (^3I) T -7F, 2F slice 330 - (5I) T -3F, AB

  • Like hole 6, use this teeshot in conjunction with the other strat—either 1F or 2F hook gives eagle strats!

11 [teeshot alt if missed full power]: (1W) T -1F, 2F hook AA 317 - (^3I) T -7F, 2F slice (BB opt) or: (^4W) T +1F from 3/4, 2F slice BB/BA [I don't recommend this one, different amount of club switching between pin locations] 330 - (^3W) T +2F from 3/4, 1F slice BB

12 [fastest]: 163 - (^1W) T 3/4, 1F hook AA rain: x 166 - (^1W) TL +2/3F from 3/4, 2F hook AA rain: T (with slight fade) -1F from 3/4, AB

alt 14 v2 [midflag]: (1W-P) TR Full, BB mid - (1W) T -1F, 1F slice AA

15: do a half second pan to the right, then: (1W-P) TR Full, AB. You can choose how to do your second shot, a punch shot or another TR shot with topspin will work decently.

16 [fastest]: mid - (^4I) T -2F from 3/4, 1F slice BB or: (^3I) T -7F from 3/4, 2F slice rain: (^4I) T -4F from 3/4, 2F slice right - (^4I) T -1F from 3/4, 1F slice or: (^3I) TR -4F from 3/4, 2F slice (BB opt) rain: x

  • on both of these pins, I do not recommend the 3I strats as they are more difficult and have little to no return over the 4I strats.

18: do a quarter second pan to the right and hit a 1W @ 3/4 power, top impact, into the rough. The second shot will be a 3W to the green and difficult to control with RNG, but if done well, will always save 2-4 seconds.

Reserved (hole->scoreboard->hole time measurements tbd) By this we'll be able to give a rough estimate of how much time saved, after a few runs on jp are completed

Estimate for those curious: Any% / All (Star) Tournaments: 2m30s-3m 100%: 15-20m (character matches are also much faster) 108 Badges: 2m30s-3m 216 Badges: 5m-6m Ring Attack: roughly even, camera panning speed is the only difference so possibly 5-10s

IMPORTANT: Ace strats mean you do not pan the camera at all. Any slight adjustment of the camera will more than likely ruin the hole out. ** THESE ARE FOR NTSC-U AND MOST WILL NOT WORK ON NTSC-J **
