Interaction Skipping: there's one little "strat" to be aware of when running this game, which is that you can gain control of Emi and move around earlier than you're supposed to when coming out of Kachina interactions (kachina being the 13 characters you deliver letters to) - this is done by clicking while the screen transitions from cutscene to gameplay, as shown by the black bars leaving the screen from the top and bottom. This does 2 things: allows Emi to move (albeit with limited screen movement), and delays (but doesn't skip) the little interaction that normally happens at this point. While in this state, along with the above effects, you can enter transitions within an area but generally entering transitions to other maps will force the interaction to happen anyway; since the game has to stumble around a bit to restart the interaction if you move early, it's a little slower than just letting it play out normally - hence, if you aren't able to directly save time from doing this, it's better to not do it at all, though not by a large amount. You can also have the interaction happen while your moving - this can happen with the first Kachina at the crossroads (letting us leave that map without standing still for the interaction), as well as at the treetops (ditto, although this doesn't seem to be terribly consistent), but also without leaving a map just by clicking the Kachina when you've clicked somewhere for Emi to go; the interaction can sometimes happen when Emi is moving (e.g. the musical Kachina in the hole).

  • black indicates connections between maps
  • turquoise indicates Kachina
  • red indicates inter-map puzzles
  • yellow indicates puzzle solutions
  • purple indicates the route I chose

One thing to note that makes this route essentially inevitable is that the very last Kachina you interact with will teleport you back to the crossroads without needing to backtrack, hence you should choose the one which would require the most backtracking to be last - which happens to be the tea-drinking Kachina, on the right of the image.

Fire: the fire people will automatically go to their destination the first time you click on the destination after interacting with the fire people - this means you click once to direct them then do your own thing.

Loading: if you quit to menu and load your save, it will place you on the map you left at the point you entered the map - this takes ~20s, and there are 2 times in the run this is faster than walking to those points.

Guide:

  1. Click at the intro to go to the hole, click to wake Emi up and leave the post office
  2. Hold right click when the map starts fading in; the right-click tutorial ends when right-click is held for a certain amount of time
  3. Deliver to the digging Kachina; skip the interaction by clicking near the exit and clicking the exit when Emi is moving
  4. Interact with and deliver to the musical Kachina in the hole; skip the interaction and make it play while you move Emi to the top of the screen
  5. The Kachina in the bush moves randomly; you can test you luck by interacting with the coughing person before you know they're in position, but otherwise just keep clicking them until they're in the correct position, drop them, and instantly move into position after interacting with the coughing person. I'm not sure if it's optimal to skip this interaction.
  6. Free the ship; as the fire person is walking, position yourself right at the exit of the map - you have to stay in the map and watch the sequence play out to unlock the ship map
  7. Go to the firefly and click it, then deliver to the sleep Kachina; skip the interaction, click directly on the transition to the top and click on the person who ate the firefly; spam esc while the little firefly animation plays, then when the menu comes up, go the main menu and load your game
  8. Deliver to the star Kachina; not skipping the interaction is fastest (despite what I did in my video), then go down the hole to the birds, scare the birds away, then make your way to the first set of caves by retracing your steps to the crossroads
  9. Deliver to the loud Kachina; all you do at the loud section is click close to Emi to make them move. Interaction skipping is possible here, I just failed it in my pb, so skip the interaction and make your way to the fire person
  10. Light the kindling on fire to smoke the wolf away; since we're loading after this, there's no need to move after directing the fire person. Once the cinematic plays out, load, and go to the treetops
  11. The little puzzle to activate the flower Kachina can sometimes "freeze" Emi in place if you do it too early, so I like to wait until Emi faces diagonally before clicking on the foliage, which consistently allows you to continue
  12. Deliver to the flower Kachina; interaction skipping is possible here to leave the map without waiting for it to happen...but I don't know how to consistently make it happen, sorry! After this go to the dry area
  13. Interact with the weeping crow, then interact with the rain Kachina - note that you don't need to be locked in place after you cry on them, so move in place to deliver to them and deliver to them immediately afterwards. I'm not sure if it's optimal to skip this interaction.
  14. Interact again with the weeping crow, fill out the three crying pot puzzles, then deliver to the bee Kachina, and interaction skip and make the interaction happen while Emi is moving
  15. Deliver to the time Kachina on the ship, interaction skipping to make the interaction happen while Emi is moving
  16. The chick puzzle on the way to the fire Kachina can be activated while Emi is moving, although it takes away your controls for a little bit, so make sure you activate it while Emi has a long distance to go to ensure that Emi never stops
  17. Interact with the fire person, direct them to the kindling, then attempt to deliver to the fire Kachina - the failed delivery will happen while the fire is lighting, and will override the little bit of control removal that normally happens here. Deliver to the fire Kachina when they react to the fire being lit. Interaction skip and make the interaction happen while Emi is moving, so that you can move directly to the exit without stopping
  18. Click to move Emi in delivery position of the reading Kachina in the pottery room, and while Emi is moving click the two lids to enable the reading Kachina. Deliver to the reading Kachina; I'm not sure interaction skipping works here.
  19. Go to the final area, click the seat to make it fall and interact with the tea drinkers, then deliver to the tea Kachina
  20. Time stops when you click the map exit to the post office
