looking to change the rules of Coop runs to enforce both players needing to be alive at all times, similar to NES Contra.  

The coop bosses have their hp scaled to 2.5x the health of single player (when both players are alive), so one player being dead would lower the hp of the boss back to single player scaling.  This encourages intentional deaths, which is not at all in the spirit of Contra.
In fact the fastest runs would be ones where the second player game overs as fast as possible

On the other hand, very few people run those categories, so maybe this rule would deter people from running coop.
