Timer?

I'm really really new to speed running, and I wanted to know how to set a timer for a console game? I can't use in game time because the game I want to run will require a precise, down to the second time, since only single level runs can use the in game time.

The problem here is that I have no capture card, and was planning on trying to use a video camera or MAYBE my webcam, but it kind of sucks. I just don't know how to set up the timer to be accurate. Do I just have to get someone else to hit the start and end button on the timer for me? I know about WSplit (I think that's what it's called), but have never used it, and I would assume you'd need a capture card to use it properly...?

If the timer is on a separate screen from the video itself (on my computer screen, while the video is on my camera), how do I handle that? Or can I just not use a video camera at all? I'm not super tech savvy, sorry.

I can wait to get a better webcam to try to speedrun the game, I just don't know how to handle setting up the timer to start when I start the game, unless WSplit can be used with a crappy webcam video, which I sort of doubt.

Again, sorry, I feel like this may be a silly question...

Oh, okay, thanks, but the rules for the game I am running explicitly state that any video evidence is valid. So I don't believe I will require a capture card. If I use a stopwatch or phone, though, should I just turn the camera to show the completion time at the end of the run? That's mainly what I was concerned about. I didn't know if it might be rejected for not having an on screen timer running, since I've never done a run before. Again, thanks for answering!

Thank you for the help, I wasn't sure if mods would go to the trouble of timing submitted speedruns. I could probably watch my own video and retime the run myself to ensure my stopwatch time is accurate too, come to think of it.

This video was accepted and is the WR for Crash Bandicoot

In the video they captured the game with their camera, and it looks like edited their splits onto the video, then uploaded to youtube

If they accepted that as a valid WR run then you should have no problem
