Well I submitted a Glitchless run that does all of NHG's tricks (albeit poorly kek). So hopefully some light can be shed on the glitchless rules here.

side-note: For anyone reading this, who is interested, I tested using NHG's Cthonian skip to enter the caves from the cellar in a glitchless run. which allowed me to skip picking up the Old Cavalry Saber on floor 3 and also skip picking up the key to Jeremy's study on floor 2. However I forgot you need the lighter to relight the lantern in the caves. Even if the lantern didn't need to be lit to finish the game, doing the maze blind would suck X). So a bit of a bummer, but I thought I'd share to cap off some of the stuff I said above.

I can understand where you're coming from, but speedrun.com has a feature that lets mods add times to the board without the needing for the runner to own an existing account. Even if it didn't have the video link, just having "Any% 6:21.34 by NHG" is better in my mind, 'cause people do find these games through this site (at least I do). I don't really see it as any different from making my own leader board in excel or google sheets which includes his run and the ones here and sharing it online (some games do this I believe...). I just see this as an accurate record keeping issue.

Adding "by the way NHG has this record" in our runs notes seems redundant when there is a site feature which is cleaner. It's not like someone's impersonating him, we all accept he has WR in glitchless and any% currently. so why not add his time to the board to reflect his standing in this "community"?

But don't get me wrong, I get what you're saying. I guess it just boils down to a problem of respecting the runners wish to avoid this site, or having a (in my mind) more complete history of the games time progression. Again I'm not saying we should disregard NHG's wishes, I just though I'd elaborate on my thinking and conclusions. At the end of the day it's not my call to make.

I hope he may post his times here himself someday (which would be the best outcome really), 'cause I honestly don't see them getting added here manually.

--

On another note. While I do think NHG defined the core rules for Glitchless, I have some questions about if certain parts should be considered Glitchless. To the best of my knowledge his 10:56 Glitchless run was an Any% run initially, until the discovery for OOB and a few other glitches. He then reclassified the video as Glitchless after-the-fact.

Some Glitchless categories also like to ensure that things that things that look glitchy should be banned. So I think we should decide going forward if manipulating/dodging the arrow is a glitch (2:57 in NHG's 10:56 video). I personally don't, but I'd hate to learn the trick and have a run invalided by the mods. (not to mention the animation cancels at 3:07 and 6:01)

Also one question not answered in NHG's run are tricks discovered after the run. For example in his 9:27 Any% run, he uses a trick to stop the Cthonian from killing him in the tunnels (at 4:28 in the video). I don't believe this is a glitch as all you are doing is standing in a certain spot where you can't be killed. I think this glitch could maybe lead to an improved route for Glitchless, but I haven't timed it so who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯

But anyway, that's kinda why I wanna see more defined rules for glitchless. I'd settle for a slight discussion though, as I kinda already can guess other runner's stance on glitchless (NHG's definition all the way kek). But I'd really like to see a mods thoughts, if they'd respond to this thread.

Checked over all my runs and the version you selected checks out. Thanks for that mate : ^).

Seeing the versions kinda makes me wish you could change your game version on steam, but that's a bit of a pipe dream I think.

Queensland, Australiaturnipp5 years ago

Yeah, new boost pads do change the run. My biggest issue with keeping track of versions is I couldn't for the life of me tell you what version I played on at the time of my runs. It does make me a bit sad that the hard work put into lowering the times went down the drain, but if the strats still work I guess it could help someone.

I'm indifferent overall, if game version is added as a filter than I'll happily try and figure out what version each of my runs was done on. This is definitely a discussion that was gonna arise sooner or later with the game still in development.

First things first shouldn't "Any% With Glitches" just be "Any%"?

Next with "Any% Glitchless" at what point is a mechanic a glitch? My main question is related to cutscenes. When in a cutscene only nearby objects are loaded. meaning you can walk through doors, enemies, ect. This can be seen here where both an unloaded door and Nightgaunt are clipped through

Don't get me wrong, I think abusing unloaded objects in cutscenes shouldn't be allowed in "Any% Glitchless". I just feel this should be clarified.

I'd also like to see an "Any% No OOB" category, because there are cool clips that don't utterly break the game. A list of OOB and Non OOB clips can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12MwUXost9th_LLvmsZ-Ad7WrK1-n55B3pN2eUgrEXZQ/edit#gid=2131349333

I know it's a bit dumb to ask for new categories when no one runs the current ones, but I hope to start running all three soon, once I've finished learning them ("Any%" route is hell lol).

Finally could an admin add NintendoHardGamer's "Any%" and "Any% Glitchless" runs to the board manually? he's made it very clear he's not going to post any of his times here (read the comments of his 6:21 run if you wanna see his reasoning).

I even made the effort to retime his 2 PBs for ya : ^)

NintendoHardGamer's "Any% Glitchless" in 10:55.88

NintendoHardGamer's "Any%" in 6:21.34

The both the GOG and Steam rereleases run under DosBox, so I wouldn't see a reason why DosBox would be banned. I only own the GOG release so I don't know if the two rereleases have the same DosBox config (side note: mac GOG version uses boxer (based off DosBox, but not the same) instead of DosBox only adding to the config confusion).

The main thing of note about differing DosBox configs (at least in my option) is the number of cpu cycles. Having too many cycles per millisecond will soft-lock the game, as you will automatically be forced back up the attic stairs whenever you finish depending them (A problem I faced on the original classic mac release running on a g3 macintosh). Also the lower the cpu cycles the easier it becomes to preform a sprint, although this is banned on SDA (But no default clock-speed is set, so their ban seems unnecessary). So I guess my own personal stance on cpu cycles is do whatever works I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Been interested in this game for a few weeks now and I'm a bit sad no mod has said anything in this thread. So thought I'd put in my two cents on the matter. I have a lot of other questions as to the rules of each run, but I guess that's a topic for another thread.

Could I please have Kid's Maths Quest ( https://www.speedrun.com/mq ) added to the Kid's Quest series ( https://www.speedrun.com/kids_quest ). Thanks in advance :)

sorry I believe I may have misunderstood you, I thought you meant doing blackout B from the main menu

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

the problem with Blackout B is your time is reloaded from the last save (bell touch). It'd set the timer back, making the run segmented technically. This is why IJG cannot be used in normal runs for example

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

If a moderator has seen this then can I please get a verdict on the use of blackout glitch in IGT runs? The in-game timer is paused while attempting the glitch, but doesn't reset it if performed correctly. So technically it's no different from pausing the game mid-run, which has been allowed in the past.

The glitch is useful in "hardcore prawn", by passing through the crumbler to enter "point of no return" earlier. here's a video

Well I found the Pyramid Inversion clip, but unfortunately the Rhombus Square Oval clip is on a computer I don't have access to at the moment.

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

I've never been able to do anything too useful with the super jump (tried on Neo-SF a while ago), but yesterday when going for Pyramid Inversion I did manage to super jump on top of the tyres stack by accident, I'll go through my footage and see if I can find it. There is also a super fast strat on Rhombus Square Oval where a super jump lets you turn sharply in the air to make a hard short cut, haven't got a full run with it cause it's hard, but I'll try to find some footage of that too

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

Sigack and I have updated the doc to include IJG. Sorry in advance, the explanation is quite complicated, but it's there for anyone interested.

I don't believe Infinite Jump should be allowed. Me and Sig have been looking into it and it relies on a bad entity pointer. we're working on adding it to the glitch guide, but it's pretty complicated shit. But basically it looks like it will vary widely from computer to computer depending on OS and memory management, so it's inconstancy is akin to the lag glitch. The underlying issue that causes the glitch is a major run time error caused by memory mismanagement and in all honesty should be patched.

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

#1, I personally think the current any% is more of a glitchless category, it would be cool to have less restrictions on any% runs, but people probably wouldn't run it.

#2, if we move to RTA then we should consider ending the run at 'Speak Now...', which would make versions not matter as much, so we could marry the two leader boards. I know there are a lot of issues with that though (especially with other categories), so it's just a pipe dream tbh.

#3, it's probably a meme, the game crashing is just a pain, I'm not sure the glitch can be executed with any real consistency (at least in my testing)

yeah hollow king skip is a strat that is only allowed in lag% at the moment (It's banned in low%). Sigack has a low% run using it here:

Sigack and I have documented the workings of the glitch/trick here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16Mxo096VXA_cqoZZqqSK7-3ZNbBxqvIM-_BJbXkrk58/edit?usp=sharing if you're interested.

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

not that I'm aware of. The closet thing would be to run it in a virtual machine (same goes for linux).

Queensland, Australiaturnipp6 years ago

Yeah, watching your 100% runs kinda makes me want to give 100% a go. I don't know if I try to make my own route or if I steal yours, but could be fun.

Well it does work on linux as well, which would make sense as the mac and linux versions were programmed at the same time.

I could be possible on linux as well, but I'd have to test that. If it does than that would make the category a lot easier as linux it's free and runs on just about anything
