This game is available on the Switch, can the platform be added?

What's the difference between these, are they just difficulty level for Championship speedruns? I'm wanting to get into IL's but don't see this option

I haven't been on gamefaqs in a while and I'm kicking myself for not noticing this user has been looking into some interesting stuff in this game. I'll also link this other thread he made detailing enemy's healing w/o players knowing

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/588647-tecmo-secret-of-the-stars/78264061

The Unity Magic glitch has been known for a bit but I haven't listed it on the site since it seemed like it has very limited use, if this impacts the any% route I'll get to updating the glitches guide to include this.

Still a lot of unknowns about it, but in general for the speedrun, we don't have access or any real use of Unity Magic until we've completed the 4th shrine (we do all 4 shrines at once as it's the most convenient w/ world movement, spells, and levels).

The most interesting thing he posted is being able to Leona bolt 1 + unarmed tina making bolt break, which normally requires Leona bolt 1 + bolt sword user attacking. If only Tina's atk wasn't bad this woulda been crazy. I guess the tl;dr is this game is still a mystery and who knows what this might lead to.

Can we add the different difficulties as their own thing? Similar to how it is setup for Army Men: Sarge's Heros here https://www.speedrun.com/amsh1

How do they work and what's the line of sight for them look like, anyone able to post screenshots?

Pennsylvania, USAzewing5 years ago

Like title suggests, instead of a thread why not make a single thread with 1 locked post. Post would include what's on page 1 of the Leaderboard moderation request thread with a submission form since no one nowadays seems to read or care about it since most just go to the final page to submit a request.

I just think it'd be more efficient maybe? Just have a form, and make it so that a mandatory field is "Did you contact any / all moderators? If so how long ago."

Figure it'd help save people from replying with the same post different day and would maybe be more organized on the site mods end since it is possible to miss a thread request.

Just my 2 cents, not that I think the current thread is unnecessary, just that no one seems to really know that the first post in that thread states everything that's been repeated constantly

Anyone know the capture formula? Can't find any info whatsoever about it other than we know less minion health and higher capture level lead to higher catch probabilities

See the last paragraph in Development here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_Collection#Development

Essentially, this is the third collection of Phantasy Star released for the PS2 as an NTSC-J exclusive game (and Japanese exclusive PSN on PS3), however unlike the previous collections, this game has all 4 of the Phantasy Star games in both English and Japanese, despite being region locked to NTSC-J

The reason this is being brought up is because I would like the use this version and compete fairly amongst the other releases of Phantasy Star games as it was both the cheapest and best option for video quality. So I thought I'd detail a little bit of the options.

This game has a lot of different resolutions the game can be set at, which consists of 240p, 480i, and 480p options. This seems to be purely to make the game look best with however the TV you are using. In addition, it has a "smoothing" option which is pretty much an option I've always seen people say to leave alone (and makes the game not look at all the way us Nostalgia folks like).

The game has a Sprite Limit option defaulted to OFF. Self-explanatory but it's there.

There's also a CPU overclock setting, defaulted to Normal, once again self-explanatory.

The 2 biggest things this version has that no other Collection has for its English counterparts are the game speed and the difficulty.

There are 3 difficulties, Normal, Easy, and Very Easy. Normal is played like the game was intended, whereas Easy and Very Easy increased mesata and Experience gained from battles.

There is also a global speed option, Normal and Boost-2, self-explanatory. To clarify, this makes EVERYTHING in the game speed up (battle animations, overworld walking, menu loading, etc.). Finally, the game has a dedicated button assigned to "Accelerate," which further boosts your overworld movement speed.

So that's the general run down of things, that being said a lot of these things can be set to make this version an equal version compared to all other releases.

I guess my input is simple: If I or anyone else wants to run on this version, we must show the pause menu before every attempt that shows the following:

[Phantasy Star 1 System Menu -> Options (Master System)]

Move Speed: Normal Difficulty: Normal Save Dialog: Manual (skips a dialog communication w/ PS2)

[Phantasy Star 1 System Menu -> Options (Master System) -> Extended Options]

Sprite Limit: On Cpu Clock: Normal

[Phantasy Star 1 System Menu -> Options (Master System) -> Controller 1P]

Button1(Auto Repeat): No Assign Button2(Auto Repeat): No Assign Accelerate: No Assign

Finally, in terms of equalness, this version does however lose a small amount of time because in order to reset the game, you have to go into the menu and scroll down to the RESET option. So in conclusion these options would make this game as close to being equal as possible.

I guess the last words I should part with here is that the PS2 collection is technically the fastest if you went all the way and overclocked it, had Boost-2 on and accelerate assigned at all times and difficulty to Very Easy, but at that point it would only be worth doing if there were multiple people interested and having this be separate from the standard way the game should be played.

Thanks for reading from what I've explored in this version of the game and I hope I have a chance to try and compete in this series!

Been trying to get into other games and mostly want to avoid the hassle of hooking up a million consoles. I've already purchased a Super Retro Advance, which lets me play GBA games on my SNES. Works really fine, albeit a terrrible 3:2 composite only video display.

Also noticed they made one for a genesis-on-snes adapter as well (which further lets you play SMS games on it).

Has anyone else looked into these kind of conversions and whether they'd be considered acceptable for speedruns? From my testing of the GBA-on-SNES, all the games seemed fine to me.

Pennsylvania, USAzewing6 years ago

As title suggest, when do you think we should end the timer. I believe initially I wanted timing to end the moment Homncruse begins to flash different colors since it's kinda hard to realize the run is over unless you retime the run. What do you guys suggest?

Pennsylvania, USAzewing7 years ago

Figured it'd be easier to have discussion here, what's your thoughts on this. As it stands, 100% is the only category where Expert Mode is a requirement in order to submit to the leaderboard.

So, a question I guess to ask in simple terms:

Do we create sub categories for Any%, Blue Line, Red Line, and 100% in such a way that each run has a Normal and Expert difficulty run?

Do we keep as is?

What do we do about Expert runs for Any%, Blue Line, and Red Line since there are no difficulty restrictions on these?

This is current as of November 24th, 2016

The Star Fox community has usually required full video proof for all games barring exceptional circumstances (like 3ds and command). However, we believe it may be worth lessening this absolute rule.

The following are the video proof requirements for each individual Star Fox game. Some have not changed, but they will be here for future discussions.

Star Fox (SNES)

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances

In addition, the following must be true (from Lowkee's thread on SF1 forums):

In order for us to verify your run, the video has to start at least before the startup "Nintendo Presents" and ends after the score screen after killing Andross. The best place to cut it off would be right before the staff roll (the boss montage). This is so that we have proof of the run in its entirety and your score will be set in stone (Venom Surface score is not shown until that screen and that is very important to determine an any% run or 100% run)

Additonally, for the Out Of This Dimension run, have the video end after the "The End" letters show up.

In addition, runs must be recorded using a capture card.

Star Fox 2

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances

Star Fox 64

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances.

For Star Fox 64, any times slower than the following are not subject to the above rule:

Blue Line - 27:00 Red Line - 35:00 Any% - 25:00 100% - 1:30:00

All of the above are for console times.

Star Fox Adventures

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances.

For Star Fox Adventures Any%, any times slower than 5:00:00 are not subject to the above rule.

Star Fox Assault

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances.

For Star Fox Assault Any% Bronze, any time slower than 47:00 are not subject to the above rule.

Star Fox Command

There are no current video proof requirements. In general, if you are submitting a world record we require a video, which is always a requirement for all games.

Star Fox 64 3D

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances.

Star Fox Zero

Video proof must be submitted in order to have a leaderboard spot barring case-by-case instances.

For Star Fox Zero Any%, any times slower than 30:00 IGT are not subject to this rule.

This thread will be stickied and be a basis for discussing video proof changes, as well as time cutoffs in the future.

Currently, all Star Fox games require video proof among submissions barring very few exceptions.

I feel it may be worth discussion to scale back this "absolute video proof" rule and instead instill a "Video Proof if time below XX:XX"

Many games that are competitive have some sort of rule (as in top placeholder times or sub XX:XX:XX times).

So, do you guys feel it could be beneficial to instill this slightly more lax video proof requirement? For reference, Super Mario Sunshine Any% requires video proof for runs below 1:25:00 - http://www.speedrun.com/sms

Pros:

Easier to be apart of the community Helps runners without capture equipment to still be apart of the leaderboard

Cons:

No proof run ever happened

My Opinion

I think it would be a good idea to remove the absolute video proof rule to make it a bit more runner friendly. I think the line should be drawn based on position (Like top 10/15). Really depends on the game, so more competitive games may have a different cutoff point

I haven't done an introduction since I think 2012 on the SDA forums but here'll be a more proper one since I use this site exponentially more and love it so much. It'll be a little longer cause I'm not really "new."

Hello, I've been a speedrunner since early May of 2012, but I've been following speedrunning since August of 2011. I got into the community by being a troll in twitch chat (mostly Mofat, you don't understand how good it was to ruin his chat back in the day, oh man) and one fateful day I messed with Iqunlimited and somehow that led to Carlsagan getting me to the SRL irc. It's....not something I recommend doing but it's best decision I've ever made.

I run a variety of games, from short games like Mega Man X, to long RPG's like Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. In addition, I time attack F-Zero GX, one of the hardest and fastest games to run, and I'd say I'm pretty darn good at it, Rank #8 in the world and got to beat a few of CGN's times, several of Iowa's times (nearly 10 year max speed #1 runner), and had held 5 different course WR's (4 at one single time, 2 currently).

Minor things about me:

  • First capture card was a chinese broken audio easycap 2.0.

  • I discovered the consistent way of bonus skips in Yoshi's Island 100% by spitting an enemy within 12 frames of the goal ring (timed by carl sagan). This method was pretty huge at the time since it made bonus game's no longer RNG for all but 2 courses, so effectively consistently saving 15 minutes or something ridiculous.

  • I did the first ever Doppler Stage 2 boss explosion skip on console for Mega Man X3 100% ( a Japanese runner did this on Uosnes a year prior but didn't know till much later).

  • I've once owned every WR for Yoshi's Island and Mega Man X3 simultaneously in 2013 (my only ever tied WR was still my X3 100% time with Nero).

  • I found 2 useless glitches in Star Fox Adventures

  • My goal for speedrunning is to run at least one game from every major game series and hit a top time in it, but it's not my end all goal.

As for what I do on this site, well I moderate the Star Fox series. I don't really verify a lot of runs, but I try to keep each game's moderation team solid and w/o issues. I put it on myself that, if a run goes past roughly 5 days, then I'll help verify said run. I also remove moderators due to inactivity of more than 2 months (I believe in checks and balance for small series moderation, but we, the star fox community, have yet to have any issues, drama, requests for mod removals, or anything ever brought up in the moderation thread except that one instance that was a site bug I think).

In addition to this, I mainly just wanted to say thanks to everyone reading this for being a speedrunner. I hope new runners read this because I started out speedrunning just like any of you, and shortly after starting I found a major element to making one of my favorite speedgames and best speedruns out there drastically less RNG heavy and more competitive.

New runners strengthen a community, introduce new ways of thinking, and generally make it more fun to continue being a speedrunner. Who knows, you yourself could be a leading factor into motivation someone to improve, find new ways of glitching a game, or just have a friendly competition to see how far each of you can go.

Long read but I've been wanting to write this for quite a while, just never really knew how to do it. Thanks for reading and here's to more years to speedrunning and community growth.

I'm interested in running this game but I see the leaderboard is undergoing construction. As a series moderator for star fox who has added sub categories to 2 of the games, I can definitely say you can really benefit from them.

How to do it?

Essentially, the default view would be EXACTLY the same as on the left side. The real magic occurs once you get into character specific runs (for IL's)

Each character is an IL, so this will be your main categories for IL's.

The first Sub Category would then be Difficulty. AFAIK, there are 3 leaderboard difficulties currently in use here (Very easy, Normal, Very Hard), so these 3 difficulties would be under the "Difficulty" sub category variable.

The second Sub Category would then be "Version." AFAIK, only NTSC-U and NTSC-J are current "versions" allowed (probably called "English" and "Japanese" for ease of access for other submitting runners).

That would essentially make leaderboard hella clean looking. For reference, Star Fox (SNES) had 13 categories and looks like this, and Star Fox Assault had an IL leaderboard w/ 9 main categories

SF1 with Sub Categories - http://www.speedrun.com/sf SF Assault with Sub Categories (for both IL's and full game) - http://www.speedrun.com/sfassault
