I have made a discord server for discussing speedruns of this game: https://discord.gg/a6TNn7m84Q

Alright, I'll get on with that a bit later today then

Definitely agree with having a discord for this game.

I wouldn't mind making a spreadsheet for ILs. The only downside is that it might be harder to find and I'm not sure how submissions to that would work but it could be good as a temporary solution.

Hey all, I saw there was a thread a while ago that asked if a level leaderboard could be added for this game, but there really wasn't much discussion so I wanted to bring up the idea again.

Imo a level leaderboard could definitely work for this game and I think they'd be fun to try and optimise each level, without having the restriction of the strats used needing to be viable for a full game run. It might also encourage more people to try speedrunning this game as it would give a relatively easy goal for someone to aim for when starting out and it would also be a nice resource for learning levels. As for rules, I think something similar to how the NSMB series does it would work quite nicely here: time ILs using the in-game clock (e.g if you start a level with a time of 300 and finish it at 284, the time would be 300 - 284 = 16 seconds) and allow any powerup (except for stars or p-wings) to be used prior to entering a level.

I've done a handful of ILs already of any levels I find fun/interesting while practicing for full game runs (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLih6s-ZVAqeoS1LC_f-jRg13PXyaJr4cp) and will likely do more and I imagine others here may also have done a small amount of ILs too so it would be cool to have a place for them to live on here.

What do y'all think?

From some observations it seems that the slow fadeout is dependent on the card animation in the bottom left corner. When the fadeout is quick, the card blinks twice immediately, but when its slow it seems to be delayed.

I've been experimenting and I think I have a solution - once the timer counts down, mash briefly and then stop. My strategy for this has been to press A or B just 4 times quickly after the time counts down. It could also just be a placebo but it seems to be working so far.

I've noticed that in most cases, the level fade out happens right after the time counts down but sometimes it seems to take a second longer? I've tried mashing to see if that helps but it's still very inconsistent. Has anyone else encountered this or know why this might be happening?

One question I have is what exactly the end goal of this would be?

You mentioned that there doesn't seem to be a resource for finding optimal runs of each level, however, for the most part, this leaderboard is that resource. Most runners of this game focus mainly on full game runs and watching other runs - both full game and level runs can be a good way of seeing where to improve in a level. Though I agree that having a single document with the optimal runs for each level in all of the full game categories could definitely be useful - and I'd be more than happy to contribute to something like this. But then those runs would have to be relevant to full game runs, which most of your proposed categories aren't.

However, if you just want to have fun, then as I mentioned before you're more than welcome to run whatever you like. If you want to find others to join you in running these, I'd suggest asking on Discord as these forums aren't very active. But I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't many who would want to run these as, like I mentioned above, most runners of this game focus mainly on full game runs.

A few other things to quickly mention:

  • You can't have a star in the reserve item slot (without cheats)
  • To submit to this leaderboard you will need video proof. However you can always keep track of your own best times in something like a spreadsheet
  • I don't know much about Mario Advance or SMB2, but if you want to figure out how to perform that glitch, I would definitely ask someone who runs that game about it as there is almost certainly more to it than just jumping in a hole

Definitely sounds like an ambitious idea..

I'm not sure if many people here would be up for such a project, doing over 9,000 level runs on any game is a crazy commitment, even with a lot of people and the runs on the level leaderboard here already cover most of the optimal strats for beating each level anyway so there'd be a lot of repetition.

Also I feel some of the goals you've proposed seem like they'd be too arbitrary or hard to define. What is a "perfect tile walk"? How do you know if someone has done a "perfect tile walk"? For your powerup ideas, do you have to start the level with that powerup (not possible with mega or star) and keep it for the whole level, or do you just have to pick one up at some point during the level? Not to say they couldn't work but when objectives get too specific it becomes harder to enforce those rules and the rules themselves would have to be incredibly precise to avoid disagreements. Maybe it'd be better to start out with a smaller list of objectives - and with those that are easier to define (like collecting star coins).

That said though, you're more than welcome to run whatever you like and if any of these categories get popular enough we could consider putting them on the category extensions leaderboard.

Also I'm not quite sure where your thoughts about speedrun competition being mostly cheating and abusing save states comes from? The majority of speedruns are perfectly legitimate and most communities ban the use of save states and cheats during runs. Additionally we have moderators to enforce these rules and ensure that runs that are illegitimate don't make it onto the leaderboards. Granted there are still some cases where cheated runs slip by - no one is going to be perfect at catching all of them but those cases are very rare. As for glitches, I'd suggest reaching out to people who run the game if there's a glitch you're struggling to perform as sometimes there's a lot more setup required than what you can see in videos and there's plenty of people who run these games to help you out. Some games also have separate categories that do and don't allow glitches and if you want to do a glitchless run of a game but there isn't a category for it yet, you can always suggest it to a game's moderators.

Time is only added on to full game Wii U runs to account for Wii U have faster loading times than DS (the amount should be stated in the game's rules). However level runs are timed using the in game timer (the clock in the top right) so no time is added on to those runs as loading times don't matter when using the in game clock.

Yes there is! should explain how to set up rng manip on wii u vc. If you need any help with it, I'd recommend joining our discord server.

Believe it or not a time of 275 has been achieved on a TAS of this game The TAS makes use of something called hyperspeed (throwing something down a slope then going into the blue shell to gain a lot of speed, then doing consecutive frame perfect jumps to maintain that speed), however no one has managed to get the hyperspeed to work yet and save time with it in an IL run yet (to my knowledge anyway). Trying to get anything better than 269 without using hyperspeed however seems impossible.

The version from 2015 is 0.9.11 so yep that's fine to use.

Yeah you can upload runs on any video sharing platform - as long as the video is visible to us when you submit and the video won't expire. YouTube is preferred however, as it is the easiest for us to retime runs on there.

The mods will retime your run for you when you submit it, they only retime any% runs under 25 minutes tho

Friendly reminder that you don't need a speedrun.com category to run something and also we can always add this to the category extensions page on speedrun.com/nsmbce if people do run this (and any other categories). But for the reasons Tedder said above, this would not be a great fit to the main board.

On the category extensions board we have completing all the Table minigames as fast as possible (get a win/loss then move on to the next) https://www.speedrun.com/nsmbce#1P_Minigames_RTA , anything else would be too arbitrary to make a category.
