I'm AndrewG. How's everyone doing?

OK, so today it was brought to my attention that my old Super Mario Bros speedruns were timed incorrectly.

What does this have to do with Pro Wrestling? Well, the reason SMB1 was timed wrong was because it was done using a VCR. My Pro Wrestling was also done with a VCR.

As I've always suspected and as far as I'm aware VCR recordings add between 0.3-0.4 seconds per 5 minutes of recording. Pro Wrestling is about 10 minutes in real time so my actual time would be 10:02.

Why do I care? Well, Metroidmcfly had previously beaten my run in real time with a 10:02. The run is now removed, but taking into account the VCR issue the runs would be virtually identical in time. It can't be determined. The only reason SMB1 can be determined is because of Bowser's patterns, but with Pro Wrestling there isn't any way to know.

There's also the fact that the standard timing for this game was in-game time initially with Twin Galaxies and then with Speed Demos Archive.

My Pro Wrestling run also happens to be the oldest standing NES world record as far as I'm aware.

So I just have a lot to say about this even though it's a silly speedrun because technically my in-game time was never beaten and it's inconclusive whether it was ever beaten in real time either because of the VCR issue.

Conclusion is this: My time is definitely 10:02 and not 10:03 because of this issue. I feel like in-game time should be the standard until someone beats my time. I just wanted to mention all of this. You can do whatever you wish.

What are they? I just wanted to look at the potential for faster runs (though I doubt it's possible).

I am a big fan of this game, and have been looking at the "top score" speedrun for a little while now.

If you were to complete Phase 01, immediately reset, and select Phase 02 I think this is slightly faster than waiting for the screen to transition. However, your score counter is reset to 0. Regardless, you can end up with a score over 26,000 even with the reset in Phase 01 (and maybe phase 02 and phase 03).

While I realize this defeats the point of starting on Phase 01, if Phase 01 is completed, I see no reason why it can't be a valid tactic. I'm still not 100% sure if it would result in a faster time.

EDIT: I'm completely fine with this not being allowed. I was mostly just trying to find a route improvement, but I guess I'll have to settle for the current strategies.

Since we now have a world record tie at 8:17, can we start adding milliseconds to the runs? I want to verify ILM's time, but want to rank people properly here and not just call it a tie.

It seems there is a spot for milliseconds in the submission area. Thoughts? I was about to time coolkid and ILM's times by framecount and just didn't want to add the milliseconds if people disagreed for some reason.

Also, I'm not sure about other times either. We could start adding decimals from here on, or say "sub 8:30" times get milliseconds. Thoughts?

I just have a proposed suggestion. Can we link the category extensions page from the main page? I just feel like this would make a lot of sense. I'm not sure the best way to do this, but it seems strange this isn't the case.

I was just thinking, it's probably possible to obsolete Devil's Spell by just optimizing the subpixels in some way. I have not tested this, but given the other setups exist I imagine there probably is a way to do it there.

I mean, jumping directly through the pipe seems likely possible. I would guess that it would save 2 or 3 frame rules?

This game needs more speedrunners. It's a very easy run to start out. I love speedrunning obscure games like this because it's so open to discovery. Anyway, thought I would make a thread since there weren't any.

Good luck to anyone who might see this!

I realized there was a slight oversight for the excitebike categories. If you don't beat track 5 faster than 1:14.00 you don't qualify the track (and thus, don't technically complete the run).

That said, I've modified the rules. The current listed runs will stay up as grandfathered runs because of the oversight.

I've been doing 1-2G attempts a bit more now that I'm working on any% again. Once you've clipped through and need to jump back (move left) to the world 4 pipe, you typically need to do a frame perfect jump in order to prevent Mario from facing leftward.

If you hold left+down while making the turnaround, it forces Mario to face rightward and gives you some leeway on the jump to the left. The only issue might be that it might not be fast enough to save the frame rule if you don't jump frame perfectly. However, I believe it should work and should help slightly with consistency.

The same applies for the walljump in 8-4 by holding right+down while walljumping backwards in order to prevent an accidental walljump turnaround jump.

Just curious, does anyone know exactly why it works on PAL and not NTSC? My theory/guess would be that Mario can jump lower on PAL, but I'm not exactly sure that this is the reason.

A few years back I made this post and recall it happening:

"I'm fairly sure that I didn't imagine this. Back 2 or 3 years ago when I was playing Pro Wrestling, I believe I somehow skipped the number of opponents I faced overall. I swear I only faced 12 opponents when I finished the game. Several things this could be: Using King Slender - it should add 5 matches to the total number of matches, however, I believe that losing in a specific manner may somehow screw this up. I have multiple copies of Pro Wrestling as well, it may have been some sort of version difference. It's at least worth experimenting on, but it may have been some strange fluke?"

However, I have yet to ever duplicate or see this happen again. Thought I would mention it here in case anyone wanted to look into it.

It could have just been my imagination, but I remember thinking it didn't add up right.

I find it strange that the rules:

  1. Start timing at "start" press.

  2. have a time adjustment rule to U.S. version

  3. I just find it weird that we have a different standard between the timing scheme of SNES SMB1 and SNES Lost Levels. I don't really understand why this is the case.

  4. I'm not so much against this, but is a little atypical. If a small difference between the versions is found later on, it could potentially be a bad thing. For example, with Super Mario World, the J version had a harder orb method that could save time over U.S. The only time difference between the versions was a single text display was only 31 frames. The standard with speedruns these days has just been to use the fastest version to avoid these kind of situations.

Just thought I'd mention it. I personally prefer starting from character control, but I guess it doesn't matter.

I know of 2 players who posted 5.61 times on Youtube for Dragster. I think these should be added to the leaderboard.
