101% Routes, Tutorials and Resources

The Beginner Guide, Intermediate Route, Advanced Route, and Expert Route are all based on the “Caves Earliest” Route that visits Crystal Caves first and frees all of the kongs through their intended methods. If you have never run DK64 before, the Beginner Guide will be helpful as it removes all of the difficult glitches and explains the route in great detail. If you have any experience running DK64, starting with the Intermediate Route is standard. The Advanced Route is also available to see what the fastest methods are, and you may transition from the Intermediate to Advanced Route as you see fit. There are no phasewalks required in the Advanced Route. The Expert Route is the fastest route currently utilizing all of the tricks in the Advanced Route as well as phasewalks.

The Castle Kongs route is more difficult and is slower on Wii U Virtual Console, but not yet timed for the N64 version. The start of the run is completely different as the kongs are freed in Creepy Castle’s boss instead of through their intended methods. There are two different Castle Kongs routes included below. The route with phasewalks is currently the fastest known Castle Kongs route and includes many difficult glitches (but still slower than the Expert Route above). The N64 Japes for Moves route listed below is the route used in the fastest N64 101% speedrun currently.

While the VC Version is faster for 101%, the routes are still very similar between the two versions. The only major differences include several lag clips added into the N64 route. Gloomy Galleon is also slightly different between the two versions.

**Any% 1-kong**
Only unlocks DK and the fastest way to beat the game. Uses telegrabbing to get into Helm early, and MMM to acquire the moves required to beat the game. 2015 route is a lot harder than 2014 route.

General DK64 Speedrun Rules

These rules apply to every DK64 category listed on speedrun.com unless otherwise specified:

• Time starts upon activation of intro story [w/ ISG] or upon starting file [w/o ISG]

	- The starting frame for Intro Story Glitch is the first frame the screen starts to fade out

• Time ends upon the start of the cutscene where K. Rool gets punched

• Start from a fresh file
• RTA timing MUST be used, NOT the in-game time
• In-game cheats are banned 
• Developer codes (e.g. B. Locker GB requirement) are banned
• You may only open the VC menu or Home menu to reset the game, change controller settings or open the instruction booklet. However, accidentally opening the VC menu is tolerated as long as no advantage is gained using it.
• You may use N64 flashcarts (Everdrive, 64drive, etc) to run DK64 as long as you are using an officially released ROM of DK64.
• DK64 runs on Wii U VC using the original rom via Wii U VC inject is allowed as of March 6, 2022 due to the shutdown of the Wii U VC shop.
• Only official Nintendo releases are allowed, unofficial emulators and the Lodgenet release (US version 1.1) are banned

No Levels Early Routes, Tutorials and Resources

The NLE route revolves around collecting 100 golden bananas in order to enter Hideout Helm, so the only differences between the routes involve switching slow golden bananas for faster ones.
This means that after getting some experience running NLE with the beginner route, you can easily swap in faster, more difficult golden bananas that are in the harder routes. It is common to see runners all use slightly different routes from each other as they choose to collect different golden bananas.

Highly recommended to start here if you are new to the game. Will assist in learning the basic fundamentals of the game while removing a lot of the inconsistencies and hard tricks of the more advanced routes.

If you’ve run any DK64 category before, then this is probably the best place to start. Includes a few skew sections along with a lot of in-level movement being changed.

This is a step up from the Intermediate route. Most things stay the same between the 2 routes. However, the new thing with this route is a second gun skew section in Caves.
This section saves 20s and can easily kill a run.

With the other routes, 40 Blueprints are collected throughout to exit MMM so you can reset out of Key 8 room. With this route, the major difference is that it collects less than 35. This means that a clip out of Key 8 Room is required to carry on the run. Before you learn this route, make sure you can clip out of Key 8 Room.

*This is the current fastest, most advanced route. It saves approximately 6-7 minutes over Helm Escape on N64. Approximate time save for VC is unknown, but certainly faster than Helm escape.*
In comparison, this route makes use of a multitude of phase walks, tag barrel storage, takeoff skip, and Camera Before Aztec. Additionally, a lot of Golden Bananas that were previously attained in Helm Escape are no longer in the route.
