This game deserves way more attention and praise! It was fantastic for 1991! Lots of cool backgrounds, awesome enemies and bosses, and interesting transitions. Originally it was meant to be Gun Frontier 2, but it was decided by Taito execs half way through that the story was too bleak and it needed to be its own standalone game. Definite time to be saved by not blowing laser early on Boss 2, and likely Boss 4 can go through 1 less cycle.
