Are older versions of this game allowed

I was thinking of running Zoombinis but looking at these runs it seems that these are played on a newer version. However the only difference appears to be that the newer version is more cartoony and is only changed visually. All locations and puzzles appear to be the same. Just wanted to check if using this version is ok.

Hey o/

Currently, only the newer version is allowed. However, this can be discussed here :) I would say danzel_glovington is the one to ask about the differences between the two games. If the differences are significant, a possibility would be to add a new leaderboard for the older version.

The biggest differences between the two is the old version allows the making of twins, feet make noises, and movement speed of zoombinis themselves are different. I feel this would change the run drastically to the point that it needs new categories for it. I haven't seen a run yet though, so it's hard to compare how it plays out. I'd love to see an old version run, then we could see how the two compare.

If a separate leaderboard or just a misc category on this one was created that would be sweet. If I learn the run I will try to record a run on the old version and put it somewhere. OBS isnt very kind with recording old pc games so we'll see how this goes.

There are many large significant differences between the versions. No two levels play exactly the same and could not possibly be timed the same. A new leaderboard for the original version of the game would have to be created for runs submitted using it.

Edit: I want to be clear that you should feel encouraged to do runs on the older version. I would also love to participate in that if I find a way to get it to work for me. All I meant is that it should be ranked as a different game due to the fact that it is a different game.

Some specific examples of not strictly visual differences are: -on allergic cliffs each zoombini waits for the one in front of it to finish crossing the bridge before the next one moves -if you skip the hotel intro cutscene too fast all doors appear boarded and you cannot see the zoombini after it's gone through -Mirror Machine on Very Hard and Very Very Hard difficulties is programmed way differently and is so filled with bugs that it plays like an entirely different level from the original -bubble wonder abyss can potentially load unwinnable layouts, and the triggers for changing color arrows registers long after it appears to when sending a new zoombini toward it -mudball walls machine moves much faster when firing -the mirror machine rotating platform moves much slower when rotating -the game starts with 400 zoombinis at zoombini isle instead of 625 -you cannot take two identical zoombinis out of zoombinis isle -you can press a single button to randomly create 16 zoombinis at the isle

I'm sure there's many more but the point is they are different games.

Okay, I think we agree that old and new versions can't have the same leaderboard.

Now, should I create new categories here ? Or should it be a new game ?

In my opinion, all the categories for the new version can also apply to the old version, so we should just duplicate the categories for old version

I'd like to see them all under the same game, but yes, different categories.

I remember when the steam version came out, the differences Danzel named really stood out to me my first playthroughs.

I haven't played the old version in probably 15 years, so I'm very excited to see a run!

So many happy memories of this game. I just got into speedrunning and am pumped to play on Old Version. I see that there is an "Older Version" category now. Can I do "Older Version" "4%" runs? I'd really love to and welcome any competition. Will work on setting it up tonight and hope to get goin.

There's a high chance Danzel would compete along side you, ProceduralDad. They are highly competitive in Zoombini runs and run the old version as well.

OMG he got the record already! Bad day for me to chose to leave my mic and camera at work to come home and see new Zoombinis records :D

Thanks all for the warm welcome and I look forward to some the friendly competition :) I just learned that Livesplit can take controller input. I just bound it to the N64 controller I use for Mario64. This is so amazing. This will make it so much better, I can use the controller to split and never leave the the virtualbox. Danzel, what is your setup? I am almost ready to get a Windows95 computer I am so sick of the virtualbox hah.

Moved to dosbox running windows 3.1, it's way better. I will post setup details some time soon. It can be set up very quickly and the responsiveness I get is way better. Still not good enough for me to get a good time on frogs tho. I do it as fast as I can and am still 25 seconds behind WR! Effing Frogs!
