I kinda had a setup that was working pretty consistently, but the timing was weird, I remember I had to switch the direction I was swimming in (the controls are like inverted or something iirc?) and that when I timed the input well it worked pretty decently as long as I could get blasto setup on the right spot
Okay I have a lot to say here so I am going to try to break my opinions down in a easy and more organized fashion than I would normally.
First I will just state what the rules should entail imo tobetbh: The rules need to be much clearer. If its about collection it should just have the collection, no reason to beat the game even if you're merely just collecting for a % which doesn't actually even effect the game itself in any way other than like powerups or w.e. Had you had to do like bonus level's and stuff I think it would be a different story, but I don't know if this is the case? I still don't completely know what happens when you collect all the babes tbh, but if anything is unlocked I think it should be done as a part of the run IMO otherwise I feel like its just like collecting extra heartpieces in zelda or something to me.
Secondly: Obviously everything in speedrunning is arbitrary.... Any% Low% are probably the only two really definitive categories because you know you're beating the game by all means possible, and you have to beat the game with as small amount of completion as possible. Like for an example, in A link to the past, the Any% run would be the same thing as a Low% run because you beat the game from the start of the game without obtaining a single item lol It is super important that things like these are discussed a lot by the community/runners. In the end anyone can make their own set of rules, but for the integrity of the LB/community its really big to talk these things out as well as possible.
Uh I have a lot of things to say, but for one, I don't really think opening your menu or something to show the % should be a requirement for the run at all. It would make verifying easier yea for sure, but that wouldn't effect the actual in game % just like not doing the Harem or w.e it was wouldn't.
Anyways sorry just super busy and tired, so these thoughts aren't coming out super great but I am down to discuss this better/more. Maybe even something we should bring up in Discord
From the sounds of things tho, I feel like maybe the category should be switched to like, "Funny Ending" or something like that
EDIT: Also I think we should have a link for our discord here on the boards
I don't personally see the need to ban FDS or anything really, granted it was done on original hardware.
I am also curious as to the differences in load times between a PS2 and a PS3, FDS might still lose time compared to a PS3 due to lag frames, load times and all the good good.
Anyways further discussion/testing should def take place
I think everyone explained it pretty well already, but of course you can still do runs like this, you just wouldn't upload it to the boards as a Any% run, as ROMaster2 said, it would be considered a NG+ or New Game+ run as a general consensus among src
but as I said, feel free to do runs like this anyways, new things are only discovered by trying new things, and also speedrun times are just arbitrary, you don't need your time to be on the LB to still have it be a Speedrun. If you want competition tho, then just run the regular categories.
From what I understood, swim glitch was still standard route? Or do you just mean the way it is/was done?
I typically like to run true Any% categories so I was going to start off with that, then depending on how I feel at that point I was going to dive into Warpless.
I will probably just watch the WR and everyone's PB at first for an idea on routing, I will def tune in if you stream some runs though.
EDIT: I wanted to ask, what is your twitch btw? Because it goes to a error page when I try to view it (here on SRC).
Thank you very much, I had intentions of running the game soon, I have unfortunately lost my cables for my PS1, and currently don't have a PS2 (it died) but have been considering buying a new one so I think I very likely might do so.
There is just very little information about the game, (in terms of speedrunning) and the rules so I wasn't too sure about what to do or where to ask it. If you guys have a discord, or some type of platform where you discuss strats/discoveries I would love to join it.
Thank you again ~
Well the question is simple, is Blasto playable on any versions of the PS2, also is it banned from being ran on PS2 on the SRC leaderboards?
Yea sorry if that was a silly question, I wasn't sure if you meant it had to specifically be the add-on or if the Duo was allowed.
I use the PC Engine Duo, which is what I am confused about I guess sorry
You mentioned the super cd rom^2, but does that mean that just regular PC Engine/Turbo Duo runs are banned then??
wow, this is going to be such a massive game changer lol very good stuff though guys. Not that I personally doubted it, but I will admit I wasn't entirely sure it would work on console, it is great to see how you guys don't just give up and assume its "fake" or something in this community though.
I really don't want to download random files. If you actually did this, upload it to youtube and show inputs. Or better yet live stream it.
Also would like to know more details... Are you loading from a save state? Have you tried it in a full run RTA or are you just using a TAS? From what I heard is brutalspeed looked into it for the disc version at least, and the collision is always there. Of course I guess anything could be possible and maybe even different under certain circumstances.
I have a lot of opinions but have personally avoiding adding any comments (In regards to a lot of these recent posts on SMB forum and also SM in particular, also would rather avoid adding to further possible conflict and I feel others exply roopert have been doing a great job of handling the situation) but I really wanted to add to the discussion of verifying all runs and progression.
I agree with roopert, I also want to add to the fact that encase of potential cheaters (which hopefully won't be the case, but unfortunately there are a lot in the speedrunning community) I think being able to look at older runs/activity is extremely important. If I ever had a suspicion about someone, this is one of the first places I will look.
It's so frustrating because of how arbitrary speedrunning and specific category's for each run are, although to a large extent I agree with what hobo has said. I am still personally quiet on the fence about what a true Low% or 100% run should be defined as, because I kind of believe that no additional items should be grabbed (in absolutely any given video game) unless absolutely necessary or vise versa for a 100% run. So this would include (but not limited to) any key items, armor, weapons, or even perishable items/items you would use in your inventory.
However I also kind of think it should be the opposite for what he mentioned (one side of my mind anyways). If what I had mentioned earlier were to be true, would that mean you only need one of each item, or the max amount you are allowed to hold? It wouldn't make sense to have only one of each... as you are not completely filling your inventory as much as possible, but then it would make the point of whether or not you need to have the highest in game level relevant which I think is pretty silly.
I have actually been thinking about this a lot myself as I would like to make my own Low% category for a game but have been on the fence as to what I define the category by, this conversation has however made me lean much further towards the idea of only defining key items/armor and other stuff as an actual percentage of completion.
This could of course bring into play the idea of additional bosses and side quests and stuff, but as long as they don't reward the player with some type of bonus like an additional power-up or piece of a equipment, I don't think it really matters in terms of game completion personally.
Of course every community is different, this is my outlook however, in terms of gaming and speedrunning as a whole.
EDIT: This would of course possibly make certain things like skipping chests or exploring certain area's of the game irrelevant (100% map completion) and not to say I don't think they deserve their own place in speedrunning... Maybe just in a different (again arbitrary) category.
You could always of course, define it TRUE 100% or TRUE Low%. For example, there are many communities that choose to use the term Any% for their main category, I personally find Any% to be the most easily defined category in all of speedrunning how ever... Just the fastest way possible of beating the game, of course there a lot of communities that don't like this.
I hope that my input has shed some good light on the topic, I really like the discussion and how well this community works together. Hopefully one day I will get my N64 running or a new one, as well as find or get a new copy of Quest.
I can't really give much feedback because I don't run Quest and haven't honestly played in since I was probably like 5 or 10 or something when it was new, but I really like the suggestions, and from a speedrun stand point, what you are saying about the leader-boards in terms of organization I think that you bring up very valid points.
I had thought hard about No2 for a bit, and I feel that myself personally like the idea of knowing more detail of the run, but I can see someone outside of the community Spectators, viewers, or just who ever is watching without the intent of running, or maybe even potentially new runners liking the idea of a glitchless vs True Any% run.
As I said again... I don't want to act like I know a lot about the game but I think that you have some very good points.
I would think you would want the most popularly ran category to be the main category, as it is typically with leader boards. Also you could just make one Any% category and then list the evolution route in the PB time (like how the show console, version ext...)
I think I understand the reasoning, but this is my input on the subject.
I don't know too much about the Category but as far as I know all you have to do is play up to Rocket town where you can find Yuffie. I am not 100% sure about this though, and perhaps I am not understanding your question entirely... If you mean do you have to beat the game first in order to unlock the warp though, the answer is no.
You use save files and the recruitment of Yuffie to warp around by causing game overs in encounters... I am not completely sure how it works as I have stated, but hopefully this helps you answer your question.
I am not 100% sure about the answer to this question so I apologize if I give you wrong information... but since no one has answered you yet I am responding to give you an idea of why (to the best of my abilities/understanding) and its because we time it through game timing, not RTA (meaning the start of the game Power On all the way to the end being the credits) rather than timing it from first input/last input. Anyways hopefully this helps ~
