is there such a thing as a software that shows what buttons im pressing on my controller?

SO yeah im currently speedrunning RE2 and i wanted to ask, can i use simply a timer on screen? or do i need to add a splitter with it in order to submit my run? (sorry if this is a confusing question) :/
