Platform restrictions for RTA runs

For full-game runs, only the following platforms may be used:

CONSOLE

  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Color
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Super Game Boy†
  • Super Game Boy 2
  • Game Boy Player + Game Boy Player Start-Up Disc
  • Game Boy Player + Game Boy Interface

EMULATOR

  • BGB
  • BizHawk
  • Gambatte

†All SGB runs will be converted using http://nudua.com/convert

Other platforms are banned for RTA, including VBA and VBA-M.

All emulators and platforms are allowed for IL runs (within reason - game must run accurately).

Please refer to http://www.gbrunners.com/game-boy-speedrunning-explained for additional detail regarding valid emulators.

Gambatte, BGB, and BizHawk are the allowed emulators. Please use the standalone Gambatte for RTA submissions, as Retroarch runs Gambatte 0.4% too fast.

This is not an issue for IL submissions where IGT is used.

MiSTer (& MiST, other FPGA, etc.) cores are acceptable, just put the name of the .rbf you used to run the game and make sure any enhancements (extra sprites, etc.) are turned off.

I believe Analogue Pocket should be fine too, as long as they aren't doing what they did with the Super Nt and Mega Sg where the output is tweaked to exactly 60Hz for HDMI compliance - that'd mess up their parity in RTA.
