Wave Race: Blue Storm Forum  /  About the "Retire" option

Should the retire option be allowed in runs?
Getting 1st is the goal of the game, so is going fast.

We could menu to retire on a course and skip it to save minutes from the run, with the requirement that "You must obtain 1st place"

Or, we could ban the Retire option and say "Retire is banned"

Thoughts?

My first reaction to this question is No Retire. This option also comes to my mind when I think about optimizing a championship run but it doesn't feel right.
The requirement of being 1st place at the end of the championship is a seperate thing I thought about, but without the Retire option that should happen anyway in a good run.

Wave Race 64 Championship rules also include "NO RETIRE".

Make it a different category which beats championships with Retire, maybe I try it out one day, but for the normal category I don't like the idea of skipping a whole course in such a short run.

I see, yeah.

Seemed like a good concept though c:

I would like to have a better argument than that I don't like the idea. So I thought about some of the consequences:
- don't play the longest track in the game anymore. Which is either Arctic Bay or La Razza Canal. I like both tracks. Arctic Bay has such a cool wave with that falling ice block (Normal and Hard mode) and La Razza Canal just feels good if you finally find the good line that you need to go through the tight corners.
- depending on the points of the AI you have additional RNG in the game. I just looked up the points at the end of my runs and I could have skipped one race, but I have the feeling that sometimes the AI could get more points than the player if you retire once. RNG is already in the game, because the weather conditions are random.

I know where the idea of skipping comes from, that's what you would do automatically in a normal speedrun but in this game I'm more of a racer who wants to finish every race with a clean and clear win. If I take the concept of a clean win further I even end with the restriction that it should not even be allowed to skip a buoy. I think I saw somebody doing sth like that in WR64.

I'd be down to make seperate categories for retire and no retire. Would you guys be down to run the two categories separately?

I could try it out and see how it flows

Having retire as an option adds a risk to the hard and expert circuits, which would be interesting

Hi everyone! I've been making some changes to the board design to try and get everything looking great and inviting! I've added variables for NTSC/PAL, weather, and rider, and have changed the layout of the IL section to be more legible. I have some additional ideas I'd like to run by the community first.

I would like to gauge community interest in moving the Any% / Retire Allowed runs to Misc. This is mainly for the purposes of tidiness - the runs and categories would remain under the Misc tab and would not be removed. If we decide to go this route, they can of course be placed back into the main section if more people choose to run. The reason I suggest this is because the No Retire categories have plenty of runs and activity, while the Any% categories just have a single run for each (and less interest overall).

Please let me know your thoughts! I am particularly interested in Braden's opinion, as he has the only Any% on the boards currently.

(Side note: perhaps the ruleset for Any% should require 1st place in the final tally? I believe the current rules only specify 3rd or better. Thoughts on this are welcome as well)

To reach the end of the circuit, If I'm not mistaken you have to end in 3rd place or higher. That's why I put that in the ruleset, as you still technically "completed" the circuit, you just didn't win.

This all makes sense to me. I think it is fine for them to stay on the main leaderboard, and for 3rd place to be sufficient as a requirement.

I agree with the decision made. I think concocting strategies to complete the circuit in 3rd or better will be fun due to the ability to retire. My question would be are we allowed to retire immediately or is it we miss buoys for the retire on that course?

You are allowed to retire immediately after the course loads. The category should exist to place minimal restriction on reaching the end of the game as quickly as possible.
