Thanks for doing the research on this JSR. I'm glad that you have a source that knows how the original BS versions worked. |

How would we verify if the feature was in the original? I suppose a separate category could be created that would allow it, if anyone felt so inclined (personally I don't think that's necessary). |

I posted this question in the discord server, but it seems rather sleepy there so I figured I'd ask here too. It occurred to me that in the src rules for this game, nowhere does it state that you are not allowed to do "up+a" (in this case pressing select) to force the continue/retry/save screen. It would certainly save time over doing the death warps, especially for the 100% category. Is this something that should be added into the rules, or would using select be allowed? |
Forum: Neutopia II Thread: Curious if the TG-16 or PC-Engine Mini consoles would ever be valid run platforms? Started by: AkashicRecord77AkashicRecord77 |
It's really funny that you post this today, because just yesterday I approved a run of Neutopia done on the TG-16 Mini. I did notice one slight difference with the mini version, specifically with magic ring usage, but otherwise they appeared to run identically. I'm not a mod for Neutopia II so I can't make a decision for this game, but I would hope that runs done on the Mini version would be accepted, unless something significant is discovered that would make the community reconsider. |

I have added a .zip file in the Resources section that includes all of the detailed maps you will need in order to complete the 100% category run. Lots of credit goes to Sveniroth for compiling these maps. Also, I have updated the link for my video tutorial to direct to my YouTube version of it, as I prefer that to Twitch VODs for this sort of thing, so hopefully that will make it more accessible for you folks, as well. |

May I ask why you're not allowing emulator runs? With the TG-16 being such a relatively obscure console, disallowing emulator runs is going to rule out the vast majority of speedrunners. If you're desperately looking for runners of this game, as you put it, I'm not sure that this is the best approach, but nevertheless, I am interested in hearing your reasoning for that decision. |

How long have you been working on these? I watched a couple of them already and I like some of the strats you used, I'll have to give them a try. I'd love to see you make some attempts live on twitch sometime; in fact, it appears that I'm your first follower! Unfortunately my capture card seems to no longer work with OBS, so I haven't done any attempts at this game for a long time because I won't be able to stream/record them. Hopefully I can get that fixed soon so I can get back to it! |

Yeah, if you've never seen the glitches to which TM is referring, then you should definitely check out one of the sub-2 hour videos from the No Credits Warp category. Even if you have absolutely no idea what's going on, it's still well worth it just for the shock and entertainment value. |

I discovered today that if you do a soft reset after you get to the "The End" screen, when you start a new game, you take double the damage that you normally would in subsequent playthroughs. I'm considering possibly making this its own category, Any thoughts? |

Yeah I agree, crystal balls don't really feel like "items". Okay so for now, we go with the rules as they are currently written. |

I had a question specifically about the health upgrades. The rules currently state that you need to collect three upgrades, but there are actually four. Even though collecting only three of them would get you to maximum life capacity after collecting all eight crystals, is it truly necessary to collect all four to qualify for 100%? |

Here's my counterpoint to the whole save/quit issue: while the refill of life is undoubtedly an advantage gameplay-wise, you also need to consider the amount of time spent gaining this advantage. First of all, you don't even have the option to save/quit unless you grab the Book of Revival in the very beginning of the game, which in and of itself takes about 20 seconds (and considering that the top three times are within three seconds of each other, that's a significant amount of time). Also, the act of doing the save/quit itself consumes time too, I'm guessing somewhere in the 15-20 second range EACH TIME that you do it, and that's not even taking into account the save points that require a detour of some sort to reach, which would consume even more time. Compare this to similar games like Zelda 1 (up+A) and aLTTP (s&q) where the advantage to doing a save/quit is undeniable, albeit for different reasons. So to me, the save/quit strat in Neutopia is very much a risk/reward conundrum, and it's one that I don't think has a large enough sample size to say one way or another that it is a distinct "advantage" in regards to saving a significant amount of time. The ironic thing is, this strat was born out of necessity to inject a heavy element of marathon safety into this run, which virtually always implies being more time-consuming. In regards to the re-timing of when the run ends, I'm perfectly fine with that. If I may make a suggestion, I would say that time should end when the screen fades to black after the last text box is cleared; that way, you have about a good second or two after you're done with inputs so you can focus on hitting that final split at a specific time. |

May I ask why the only approved emulator for this game is Bizhawk? I only ask because I use a Mac and unfortunately I couldn't find a version of Bizhawk that runs on OS X. I'd really like to start learning this run, but it would be a shame if I couldn't submit any of my runs. |
