Im possitive, that skipping out on Thorn shield is the optimal way of beating this category.
I ended up buying 2 extra lives, and buying weapon 3 + Pow 3 to help me on the twin bosses. Ended up dieing to twin bosses 3 times? Before finally clearing it....fantastic time regardless!
