I'm brand spankin' new! HELP!

Greetings

I recently bought a Sega Genesis 1 (non-HD Graphics model). I have been playing these games via AV-C on a flat screen television. As many of you know, this causes the game to look like poo.

So, I looked on Facebook marketplace and finally found a CRT TV for free. Picked it up, plugged it in, and sure as God's got sandals, the graphics look amazing.

My main question comes here: Is this a legal hook-up for competitive speedrunning? Furthermore, what would be illegal? Obviously not using an emulator (have the original system and carts), but what are the boundaries?

Am I able to use a third party controller? Not a huge fan of the Genesis controller.

Is this (speedrun.com) the most populated place to talk about all things speedrunning? Where do I post my PBs and track other gamer's times?

Right now I am training on Sonic 2 and eventually Vectorman.

Thanks in advance, Techpalms

For the hook-up question, ask the community for whatever game you want to run. If there are any rules on that, they'd be the ones to tell you. Same goes for controller.

speedrun.com is generally considered the hub for speedrunning, although some communities, notably Mega Man, have their own sites.

Last, once you know what game you want to run, just find the right category and hit the "Submit Run" button to submit your PB.

Best of luck to you.

You're almost always going to need to ask for regulations and rules on a game-by-game basis, so a specific game's forum is a good place to ask these questions, or directly contacting the moderators.

Generally speaking with controllers, you don't have to stick with the original hardware as long as the controller you're using doesn't facilitate actions that can't be used on the original controller (Such as no simultaneous up+down inputs, no turbo etc) and this is the case for Sonic 2 at the very least.

The leaderboards themselves are where you post your times, such as the Sonic 2 boards. The moderators will ensure that your details are correct before verifying (or reject the run if anything is blatantly wrong, please read the rules before submitting a run.) but we do ask that you do make an effort to submit correct timing, as it makes our workload a lot easier.

Thank you to both who replied. I've started a thread on the Sonic 2 boards and we'll hope for the best.

God bless
