Unable to Have Emulator Category?

Howdy Hi All!

All new to speed running and only just got into this literally last night when streaming Time Crisis II and my community getting me to try for WR on Very Hard No Light Gun.

I completely understand why Emulation would and could be seen as cheating, but out of interest is there no chance to have an Emulated category? If not I completely understand. I am just curious is all.

The reason why my game is emulated is solely because I do not own a PS2 anymore to be able to run and capture the game properly. I only have my PC available to me and a lot of love for one of my favourite games.

Hey TheXploder,

It may take me some time to set up but this is certainly possible. We don't want to discourage those who are interested in the TCII community!

Are you emulating the arcade version or the PS2 version? This would decide where I nestle the category. I can do some other updates at the same time!

This is really appreciated and I will join the Discord when I am able to. Thank you for the response.

My first runs, that I uploaded on YouTube today, were PS2 Emulations. I know the game isn't easy to emulate at a consistent quality on PCSX2 due to shader difficulties but it doesn't seem to have any problems concerning consistent frame rates etc after doing tests pre and post stream.

If you wish to enquire about anything else I am happy to help in any way I can!

i like to add that i've emulated it on mame version 254 for the arcade version of time crisis 2 from start to finish, though it does have it's graphical issues i was still able to see the health and bullet counts. well a bit.

First, congrats to Planetaryashes on his run (and getting it to work on MAME!)

However, MAME should be a separate category as it is too different from the PS2 version. MAME uses mouse input while the PS2 uses the mouse emulating an analog stick which is far, far less responsive. Even more importantly, MAME runs faster than the PS2 in just about every respect. I did framecount on Stage 1-1 from the -WAIT- at the storefront to the -ACTION- after the truck tips. Here are the results.

PS2 Start Time 1:59.467, End Time: 2:06.467, Frame Rate: 60, Time: 7 MAME Start Time 37.617, End Time: 43.15, Frame Rate: 60, Time: 5.533

As you can see, in this 7 second window, MAME has already gained 1.5 seconds on PS2 runs. Multiply that ratio by the length of the run and I think you can see where this is going...

Finally, if at all possible WolfMAME should be used instead of vanilla MAME to prevent cheating. I don't think Planetaryashes cheated, it's just a good precaution in the future.

Hey DonAtreides,

Thanks for the very helpful info. I'll take a closer look this week and return with an update!

What was the verdict on this?

Since no other mods have dropped in, I am inclined to say it's a separate category. I'm gunna double check the timing before making the move but should be completed in the next day or two!

Sorry for the delay here, I have applied the fix and everything is now under a variable category in the Arcade seciton.

Don i'll clarify this: that i never cheat on light gun games cause despite that, but i did try it on wolfmame though. but it couldn't load the 2nd area of the 1st stage, unless if there's an update version of wolf mame for the 254 then i'll give it proper go, but also to throw this in there as well wolf mame had some issue with time crisis 1 where you couldn't even shoot the helicopter down

The ideal would be to use WolfMAME, but if that's not possible then yeah, it makes sense to use what works instead.
