Is there even a notification option for comments on our runs, or are notifications just automatic or nonexistent for them? There's nothing in settings about them.

It's quite disappointing to see that once again a change has been made to the site without thinking through the problem thoroughly and without consultation from the community at large 🙁
Anyone from large and small communities here on speedrun.com could have seen this becoming a problem from miles away; users making run-comments generate NO notification on the recipient's side (the runner), nor on the moderator's side. As moderators, we're now left in damage-control mode with no way of knowing when or where a comment is made on any run, across hundreds or even thousands of run submissions. This reflects very poorly on the site as a whole when anyone stumbles upon spam/hateful/troll comments, making the community moderators look bad and potentially discouraging runners from ever submitting their runs to this site because of those unmanaged run-comments 🙁

PLEASE Elo, add run-comments as a notification option to the user notifications. Failing that, please add some way for moderators to disable run-comments as a whole on a single run submission or a game as a whole.

Additionally, run-comments are NOT reflected on the audit log for the game. Only thread messages are displayed here despite the name "comments" lol https://i.imgur.com/7SdAvqi.png

to be fair, this was a feature that has been getting requested for as long as i can remember

it's also a feature that was "not going to be added" for as long as i can remember, for precisely the reasons that everybody is complaining about here

Like I see the benefits of keeping people's interactions on speedrun.com so people don't have to exclusively interact through Discord and other places. That being said, I just think it's pretty naïve for Elo to not have any moderation tools in place for run-comments because y'know people are always wholesome on the internet and won't abuse the feature when left unchecked (as I'm sure @MetaMeta and Elo are fully aware of from the forum messages and threads here 😉 )

Like I see the benefits of keeping people's interactions on speedrun.com so people don't have to exclusively interact through Discord and other places.

The forums already serve this purpose, essentially, and they're already massively underutilized as a communication method as it is.

The problem with the comments is they're not even currently designed as any form of communication because you can't reply to people whatsoever. They even screwed up the ascending/descending order of the comments because new comments are fed to the bottom of the list, not the top.

Whichever way you cut it, the comments were clearly an extremely rushed addition programming wise, and I think they should go away entirely myself until they've discussed how they should be implemented with the actual community. Comments themselves aren't inherently bad, I just wonder if any communication behind the scenes whatsoever even occurred as to how they should be implemented, or if it was just "People want comments." -- "Added.".

Even worse updates are pushed out live all at once with seemingly (?) no prior testing done on them. Any user on this site could've pointed out the numerous amount of issues almost right off the bat, but they're just pushed live and every board's just left to deal with until stuff gets fixed.

The issues here and with every previous Elo update could have been solved with community beta testing, and/or running the potential changes past the users first. People have been crying out for Elo to provide better communication since they took over, and we've hardly had any of it. Every update has been effectively radio silence until you drop another pile of changes that sets the forums on fire.

For a company that's always saying it's trying to promote a "community", you sure seem to be intent on excluding us from everything.

Yes, we can be aggressive at times, but that's because this site is important to us, and we're frustrated with how you're handling this. I assure you that we're capable of communicating normally. If you really have read any of these threads, you'd be able to see that.

If you're worried that we can't come to a consensus on potential changes, because surprisingly we all have differing opinions like normal people, here's three options that didn't take me any time at all to think of:

1. Make features able to be disabled, for users who don't agree with them.
2. Just make a community bloody poll, and roll with the most popular answer.
3. Get your act together so this kind of stuff doesn't happen every single update you make.

(If you opt for option 2, please note that we would also want the poll designed in such a way to avoid manipulation on either side. You know, like a normal poll.)

But because I know you won't read this, I'm just going to post a toucan now.

What I find to be weird is that they literally added a post in the News section at one point essentially saying that they have beta-tester applications up for anyone who might want to apply. It's still there however I don't know if they added even 1 person as a beta tester or if they closed those applications but I think they should just reopen those again and actually choose people this time. Like why make a post asking for beta-testers and then not add anyone and completely forget about its existence?
This is the post I'm referencing by the way: https://www.speedrun.com/news/581-2021-2-23-knowledge-base-and-layout-updates

Given it says User Research instead of Beta Test, i assumed that just meant "we legally need explicit permission to collect this data, so please sign here so we can. it's for the good of the site, we swear!"
