Pretty sure the main thing that the emulator should do is play the game at the right FPS. It should be 50 FPS for the Genesis version since that never saw an NTSC release, and 50 or 60 FPS since there was both a US NTSC and European PAL release. Of course mind the release region of the CD version to make sure you're running at the right FPS.

Edit: BizHawk will properly detect the right region and FPS, so that's generally going to be the safest bet.
