Rejected Run Appeal

Hello, I would like to appeal to my rejected run. (https://www.speedrun.com/tetrisnes/run/zgg0rg0z)

The Mods message was: "Game Genie codes may not be used to alter the way the game functions in any way, including skipping to the level select screen. It is also not permitted to use an altered background; the screen must show what the game is displaying in its entirety. In addition, it is strongly recommended that no Game Genie codes are running whatsoever, even if they are not specifically used in the submitted run."

Reasoning of my appeal: -GG codes aren't allowed even though the codes used aren't affecting the game play of the original game and/or isn't use.

If so, why is there a run that was approved using a GG code (Won't name for the sake of it being rejected), and possibly even more runs that were using a GG code but just wasn't shown in the run.

Also, why can't GG codes be allowed even if they aren't affecting the gameplay of a certain game? If the GG codes that were use were affecting the gameplay of the original game, I would agree but it simply isn't affecting it.

  • "It is also not permitted to use an altered background; the screen must show what the game is displaying in its entirety."

The link to the video without the modded layout [Original Emulator window capture] was obviously provided in the description of the run. ()

In addition, If a run that only shows an Emulator window can be verified and accepted, but a run with the controller being audible in the VOD and has two VODs to support the validity of the run is rejected just because of Game Genie codes that don't even give a single advantage to the gameplay of the original game, then in my opinion the moderation of the runs are pretty flawed.

You submitted the run with a modified layout and using GG codes.

Yes, a raw video might be in the description, but that should have been submitted instead of the video with a modified layout. That's not on the mods, that's on you.

Re:GG...When you start fixing memory values to what you want you are modifying the original game... i doubt you're gonna find many, if any, speedrun leaderboards that allow the use of GG codes because of this exact reason. There may be some special cases but they're probably not main categories(i.e. meme runs).

There may be another run that uses a GG code... the mods aren't infallible. We all make mistakes. Hell, that mod might not even be aware because they might be a speedrunner first and not heavily invested in the high score scene where this information is presumably more commonplace.

While I understand your frustration, the mods are TRUSTED members of the community that are VOLUNTEERS. They do a good job of keeping everyone honest on this board and they do it during their free time for no pay. Integrity is very important when it comes to leaderboards/record keeping... so if you can't follow the rules then your run will be rejected, sorry.

That said, I do hope you come back to do more speedruns! I love this game and love to see more runners putting times on the board :)

i think a disconnect between the highscore tetris community and the speedrun scene is the use of GG codes. In the highscore scene GG codes to modify non-gameplay related things are used by 90% of all players at the maxout+ levels of skill. This is because Everyone uses the code NNAOOK(or ENEOOGEZ) to uncap the score if it reaches over 999,999. Most people also use OPIPEX which removes the long cutscene at the end of games so they can jump into a new game quicker. None of these codes modify ANY gameplay, and so the community has fully allowed the use of them on all leaderboards.

I agree with disallowing some if not most GG codes. notably ROMhacks. But I also think some should stay allowed. Codes like OPIPEX and NNAOOK that are the most common and that dont modify gameplay dont impact the speedrun at all. Because the thing that is skipped is before or after the speedrun starts and ends and has ultimately no affect on the run itself.

Also I see a fair chunk of the games by top players in the 100L and 300k Lines category are already done with the GG code OPIPEX.

This is true. A lot of the top runs are already done with the OPIPEX code already used, however, here's the problem that we run into with allowing some codes that don't affect the gameplay of the game: people can sneak in other codes that DO affect the gameplay.

If the player who uses OPIPEX or the 1M score code were to, say, show the GG menu and show that only those codes are selected, and then go immediately into the game without cutting the video, I would be fine with allowing them, but it would be up to the rest of the moderation team on whether or not they agree with me on this issue.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
