1.4.1 Added an option to craft beehives, identical to the ones found in jungle. 1.4 also made those bees hostile towards enemies, just as much as towards the player. Journey mode meta has since shifted to using the beehives for killing bosses, skipping pillars, and even making Moon Lord die in under 2 seconds.

Pillar Skip

There is a limit of 200 NPCs active in the world, and by reaching this limit, you can prevent other NPCs from spawning, even if they are forced to. So is the case with pillars -- you cap the entity limit, kill cultist, and skip straight to the 1 minute countdown before Moon Lord spawning.

This skip has been quite problematic with bees though, because, supposedly, bees can't take up the '0 entity slot', which often leads to one pillar spawning. Luckily, Cultist under 50% HP can use attacks that count as mobs an take up the last entity slot (and linger after the boss is dead). We can use them to ensure the skip works.

Pillar skip with Builder pot

Builder potion gives you +1 reach and increased placement speed. The former makes the setup a little simpler, and the latter potentially lets you do the skip several Cultist attacks sooner. The differences in setup are explained at the bottom of the google doc.

If you did fail though, say, by killing him after the one star disappeared, and didn't get the green message saying Moon Lord is gonna spawn - you can still finish the run, as the bees can hit pillars through the shield; if you only got one pillar to spawn, it might not be that bad, depending on where the dungeon is.

Moon Lord 1.5 second kill

Moon Lord spawns a specific amount of blocks above the player. By making a box with master mode bees at the right height we can kill him nearly instantly, and skip the 10 second death animation.
