Forum: Resident Evil 4 (Console)

Thread: Full Console submission rules

There are so many meaningful and better alternatives to this. Sonic Adventure 2 has a time threshold, in which times lower than that do not require video nor fully vetted verification. Donkey Kong Country has a leaderboard that does not require runs to be verified at all in order to be submitted, where the community's interest in verifying the legitimacy of runs is a responsibility headed by the entire community, with a strong collective incentive to simply point out suspicious or obviously cheated runs for a larger discussion on the matter, otherwise the whole integrity of the board is compromised.

This may only be two examples, but these are both very large communities with tons of runs, runners, and time discrepancies. I'm sure you can find more if you look hard enough. A leaderboard does not benefit from gatekeeping to this extent, and othering those who want to enjoy speedrunning this is speedgame self sabotage, which is a bit weak considering the reasoning behind it is "verifying all runs takes too long". This is a hobby. I'm begging you to reconsider.

Edit: I just realized your mod team has 5 people on it, 0 of which are verifiers. Please consider adding verifiers instead of removing runs as well, especially considering that if this is as popular of a game as you claim, finding people willing to verify that New_Runner_442's 4h any% time is legitimate, if told what to look for, shouldn't be all that difficult. But if you care more about leaderboard aesthetics than integrity, I don't see this being a good solution for you either, since I doubt you'd find a large pool of verifiers very aesthetically pleasing.

is there a chance we could get some kind of modified no skips ruleset for item rain? I'm fine to keep going on the "only gv rockhop/respawn & bc3 cut/ultra" unstated ruleset we're currently playing under, I just feel like as the category gets more players the meta's gonna devolve into hoping god hasn't blocked specific complicated skips (cm & wgm come to mind) or that there's a lucky shroom that lets you do a skip a lap early.

it wouldn't disrupt the category as it is right now, but it would future-proof things a bit. understandable if it's not a high priority tho, item rain is a niche category

Thread: Emulator Boards?

Ah, I'm realizing that there was discussion about emulator boards in another thread, I'm really sorry about bringing up a repeat issue when you'd already come to a conclusion about it months ago. My capture card currently bugs out really hard when I try to record audio and I was wondering if there was something I could do that was more convenient for me.

Reading about the inaccuracies in the "Different Category Per Console" thread, along with the whole "if we have a separate board for this, then we have to potentially worry about making it fair" ordeal, I can understand why there isn't an emulator board.

Also just for reference, it is really easy to cheat on Wiis in particular. The difficulty with cheating in a game like this isn't the act of doing so, but the act of making it undetectable for moderators, which PC doesn't lend a particular advantage to.

That said, thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi! I'm sorry, I'm aware of how annoying this might be logistically, but I was wanted to know if there was any possibility of having emulator boards at any point. I know they wouldn't be able to compete against consoles on the main boards since they're timed RTA and computers have faster loads, but I was wondering if there was any possibility of a separate leaderboard for them. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Thread: Why is @Jaypin88 banned?

Started by: JubileeJubilee

Plagiarism is a serious enough offense to get someone immediately and permanently banned from many universities/colleges. Even if it doesn't get you banned, it leaves a very strong mark on your permanent record. These people are not treated like regular students again for a long time, because allowing cheating of any kind undermines everyone else's accomplishments.

Are speedrun leaderboards as prestigious as universities/colleges? No, not really. But leaderboard integrity is one of the pillars of the hobby, and this is an example of how seriously other walks of life treat plagiarism: the same as any other form of cheating. Cheaters should not be allowed on leaderboards, and Jaypin will not be allowed on any leaderboards I moderate. Especially not if he's going to be manipulative in his apology.

Maybe we can reassess a couple YEARS from now. But May -> August is not enough time for someone to make meaningful change in their life.

More in-depth explanation of the bug @TiyentiTiyenti was describing above, including a workaround. This only happens in a very specific circumstance but I would still prefer if it were fixed.

weird glitch on the sa2 boards, some people are shown as "first place" more than once. it also affects the profiles of the affected users. shown is talon's profile page, which has 2 1st place runs in 180 Emblems (one of which being not only obsolete, but also beaten by someone who isn't talon) and a 1st place run that is actually 5th place on the Any% boards. http://prntscr.com/u0kskl http://prntscr.com/u0kt1v

also shibakee's run (6th place) is inexplicably shown as 3rd place. http://prntscr.com/u0kti0

(Sorry! Posted as an individual thread instead of in this superthread. The fact that "Feature Requests" links to the main forum and not just this thread always confuses me lol. Here's a mirror of my original thread post.)

Can we have a leaderboard-side thing that allows mods to choose the Centisecond denomination of time rather than the Millisecond one?

In a lot of games, In-Game Time is displayed to the Centisecond (.xx) instead of the Millisecond (.xxx). Livesplit similarly only displays time in centiseconds, and you can't even get the millisecond digit without uploading to somewhere like splits.io and looking in the run statistics section. Games like SA2B also have an issue where people submit the digits of the IGT as 28 42 27 for example, which will display as 28:42.027 instead of 28:42.270 (intended) which requires a lot of manual editing from mods to make uniform.

I'm not asking for a change to the default, but if there's any way to make it so that centiseconds can be a feature that individual games can enable rather than being forced to milliseconds that would be wonderful. Thanks for your consideration.

there's no padding under the "There are no runs." text. Works fine for everything else so I thought I'd mention it.

Thread: Update on the Moderation Rules

Started by: DaravaeDaravae

30 Apr 2020, 18:56 (edited: 30 Apr 2020, 18:57)

This change is baffling. SRC should not be a melting pot for all of the communities within speedrunning to exist in the same way, it's a piecemeal combination of a bunch of communities built around speedrunning specific games. Taking way the individual agency of specific games to ban specific users and delist runs will only further reduce incentive for those currently not using this website to become a late adopter. Adding "red tape" for the sake of the end user within the community is a far larger hinderance than it may initially seem, because of the limits it puts on those that create, maintain and facilitate said community for the rest of those involved.

I think many communities would have instead preferred some form of tandem, in which Moderators can provide some form of reason directly to SRC staff while blacklisting a user, and SRC staff can open a dialogue with said Mods where they can further explain or work through blacklist-related decisions, and both parties can come to individual conclusions on specific users based on the kind of threat they may pose to the site as a whole. On the other hand, it would be some form of quality control for the mods in question, and you can more closely monitor mods who are a bit too ban-happy and stop the problem at it's source, since that seems to be what this change was made for in the first place.

Hopefully this change goes back to the drawing board for a bit.

Since category extensions boards are now linked directly to the main boards and vice versa (thanks for this btw, very useful), I was just wondering if it was at all possible to have the catex board's resources link to the main game's resources page, or even just a clone of it so that all of the resources don't need to be uploaded twice. I can understand that some people would want to have different resources for each but having the option to "use same resources as main game" with just a lil checkbox to enable/disable would go a long way.

I have a password system for all of my important passwords. I came up with a password I really like for SRC after the first leaderboard compromise. I was forced to swap it to a different password because of the second leaderboard compromise. I'm not asking for people to let me use a really weak password ("dog123" for example) again, I just want to be able to re-use the earlier password I came up with specifically for SRC before I had to come with a separate, not as enjoyable one to use.

I understand why password security is important, you don't need to lecture me about it. I just want to use the original one. If that can't happen it's not a huge deal I was just asking.
