New runner, a few questions

Hello! I just started learning 11 exit glitchless and I have a few questions.

Emulation: I can't use a capture at the moment, so I'm running on emulator. Unfortunately, I can't find a clean Japanese ROM, and none of them that I've found can be cleaned with romclean. Are there rules regarding unclean ROMs or ways to figure out if whatever the modified data affects the game in any significant way? Is it possible to just get a patch for a clean US ROM that'll convert it to a Japan version?

Technical stuff:

  1. What exactly affects the fly speed you get? I've noticed that on Donut Plains 1 my fly speed is inconsistent, and it doesn't always seem to correlate with Mario's ground speed when I take off, but I may just not be able to read the numbers quickly (using the practice cart ROM) enough.

  2. On the cape door trick in Bowser's Castle. I frequently don't get flight after going through despite having Mario in the flight animation when I enter. Even if I use room reset on the practice cart, sometimes he just won't fly no matter when I time the jump. I always hold forward and tap up to go through. Is there something I'm missing? If I'm accidentally dropping the forward input on the last frame or two, will I not be able to fly?

Thanks. I look forward to getting a halfway decent run to submit soon!

You just have to find one

Emulation: I can't tell you where to get roms, but Google is your friend.

  1. When you are in flight state, your horizontal speed oscillates between 51, 50, 49, 48, and 47 subpixels per frame, in that order, cycling every 5 frames. The practice cart has that number in red at the top left. To manipulate that speed, tap right for a short amount of time (e.g. if you have 48 speed, and want 51 (which is the fastest) you need to tap right for exactly 2 frames)

  2. I'd need a video on what exactly you're doing wrong, but the flight meter is also shown at the top left of the practice cart (the white numbers below the speed and above the yellow p-meter), counting down 80 frames from when you took off. Look at the number that remains when you enter the door. That's how many frames you have to jump before your door fly is lost. Try jumping on the very right edge of the 2.

And no, you cannot convert a U rom to a J rom

tap right for a short amount of time That's super helpful.

I'd need a video on what exactly you're doing wrong Paying attention to the flight meter is already helpful, but I can't get door 7 to be consistent for love nor money, so I recorded it:

Somehow while warming up beforehand I was getting the meter above 30 most of the time when I went through the door (on door 7), and I'm not sure what I was doing different. And is it really frames until you jump? As I could go through with like 10 on the meter, jump before it's exhausted, and not get the cape to deploy. 29 on the meter is the best I've done, and it looks like it just needs to keep the meter above 0 until the top or near top of the jump.

Thank you very much for the help

You're jumping way too high when you start room 7. Just tap jump. If you jump that high, you're running out an already relatively tight timer. (You're jumping way higher than you want/need to in room 2 as well, but the timer is more forgiving.) Just hold right and tap B.

Wow, that's way easier than what I was doing. Thanks!
