New Category I've Been Working on For 2 Years
1 year ago

Though the run is yet to be complete, I wanted to talk to the mods privately before I make the blog post on my site that announces it. Whether or not it's accepted here, I intend to introduce this category because it's been a lot of fun making and optimizing it.

I won't say too much about it yet, because it's still a secret - but it is in the same vein as Lunar Dragon. It alters the way you play the game, but in this case, there are about a million different strategies one could employ to meet the requirements to complete a run. I expect it will not be optimized for years, due to the sheer amount of possible solutions there are to completing a run.

Some info I can give:

  • There are no limits on powerups.
  • All 96 exits must be completed.
  • You CAN NOT return to a level you've entered and completed before unless it has more than one exit.
  • I think the category would be best served by a very slightly modified rom, but I can't reveal what modifications (there are only 2 needed) that I would make, lest I give away the jig.

I've been in the community for a while now, 5 years or so, and wouldn't make this request if I didn't have the material and presentation to back it up. So, mods, please get in touch privately. I'm in the discord.

hmmm... the vague idea has me pretty stumped... Not sure what to say, but I do like the idea of new categories.

Is this just Lunar Dragon but with.. less restrictions? Like including powerup incrementation/ACE stuff? IDK what else to think, really LOL.

This is NOTHING like Lunar Dragon.

I would pay anyone who guessed it 100 bucks. It's an extremely strange idea, but it turns out, its very fun, will promote a lot of experimentation, route planning, etc - and I think it will turn out to be an awesome addition to the community.

I can't give an exact date for when I'll be ready to show it off, but I've wanted to post about it for more than a year, but I needed time to make sure it made sense. I have other commitments, so I can't be working on it full time. But, I am always working on it.

The idea is very simple actually - but once you hear it, your mind starts racing, and you go, "Oh my god, there's a million ways to do this...I bet I can think of something better than what I just did." It's something I hope each runner will try to accomplish in their own way, without relying on a set strat. In fact, the entire purpose of this category is to encourage creative problem solving, game knowledge, and strategy. I hope every run anyone ever does looks different, because if not, I have failed in my design goals.

I think it'll be worth your time, I really do.

Categories are added when they are needed, and not just when a category is invented. If we did that we'd have a hundred boards with only one or two (or no) runs. The point of a leaderboard is to be able to compare run times against others who did the same type of run. If there is no demand for a comparison tool like this, there's no reason to make a leaderboard for it.

In short, announce your category, and if it gains popularity and people want an easy way to compare to others, then we'll add it. That's how the majority of the categories on the category extension board have been added since we hosted stuff on speedrun.com.
