Before you try your hand at speedrunning or even just playing this game, I highly recommend playing the original game first, Super Metroid. It is a masterpiece, and everyone should experience it. You will appreciate this romhack much more once you have done so.

What is Super Metroid: Project Base?

  • Project Base is a ROM hack of Super Metroid that keeps the original map mostly intact, while adding new stuff. It doesn't force the player to take a new path, or to use any advanced techniques. Well-known sequence breaks and shortcuts have been left alone, with many new ones added. Highly speedrunnable, and with a level of difficulty that is accessible to anyone.

  • General movement is less inhibited, with many new tricks made possible. Respin in midair, backflips, momentum keeping from a jump, just to name a few.

  • Modified enemies and bosses, including AI and graphical touch-ups

  • Faster elevators, doors, room transitions and item-collection sequences (no fanfare!)

  • Bug fixes and polish applied whenever possible

  • New rooms added, others expanded and/or merged

Are glitches allowed in this category? -Yes. Many are used, such as Zebetite Skip, PBK Clip, and Short Charging.

How are you doing manual damage boosts/backflips? -That is achieved by holding down the run button and jump button pre-emptively, then holding down on the d-pad, and rolling the d-pad in the opposite direction which samus is facing. Basically, a backwards hadouken. So for example, if samus is facing right, you hold run and jump, then hold down (you should be crouching) and roll your controller from down to left.

Your game's colors and another runner's game colors are different from each other, why is that? -Project Base 0.7.2 has 2 color palettes: Regular Palettes, and Vanilla Palettes. Regular Palettes recolor the entire game to differentiate this romhack from its vanilla counterpart, while Vanilla Palettes keeps the colors and tilesets of the original game (mostly) intact.

Where can I get this romhack? -begrimed.com/pb

How does the any% route differ from the original game?

  • The first thing to note is that with the physics changes, the way you approach many rooms optimally is going to be different than the way vanilla's rooms are done. There are lots of little things you can do to save time not mentioned here.
  • Bomb Torizo can be skipped by backflipping out of the room, right after you get bombs, within a 3 frame window. This saves around 15-20 seconds.
  • Generally you get super early power bombs by using PBK Clip (Powerbombs Before Kraid), and then behind kraid is a power bomb door that lets you access speed booster and wave beam without having to go the long way around. -Up towards phantoon there are a couple of shinesparks not possible with vanilla
  • Phantoon has less RNG but still enough to kill a WR pace run
  • After Phantoon there are more time-saving shinesparks, also not possible with vanilla
  • You can enter maridia through a back way to the right of the hellway room, instead of having to go through the hellway again, all the way down, & break the tube
  • You can also skip botwoon quite easily
  • On the way to draygon the map is a bit different, there's no "full halfie" anymore. There are a couple of different ways to get to draygon, one which is standard for most runners, and "backdoor draygon", which saves 20 seconds but requires precise placement, shooting a super missile, and sparking diagonally right after.
  • Shinesparks do considerably less damage to draygon in this game. Extra supers are used in this route to end the fight quickly.
  • There's a shortcut from maridia all the way to norfair, and it takes considerably less time than in vanilla. -Norfair is pretty much the same, except you enter it via the back way, and exit it through the front after ridley. -On the way to tourian from norfair there is a series of difficult shinesparks which all save a ton of time if done correctly. -Tourian is about the same, except you do the baby metroid skip much differently. -The escape is the same as well.

Why not do phantoon first then? -The Project Base community has timed it out, and found that it is objectively slower by about 3 minutes, because having speed booster as early as possible in this game saves more time than getting gravity first and being without it for that much longer. -In wrecked ship especially, there is a shinespark referred to as the "apollo spark", where you can just fly to the top, because there are some breakable speed blocks on the way up. This is obviously faster than going up without speed booster. There are many, many more instances of this throughout the game, as well as some back-ways into maridia and norfair that are faster than their vanilla counterparts. -The sum of all these tricks, shortcuts, and backdoors make for an overall faster time than the current fastest route in the original game.
