What's the best way to practice?

I'm new to speedrunning and I found out that the best way to practice is to download a practice mod for the switch, but I'm too scared to mod my switch. Is it a good idea to get a new one for doing actual runs and my old 2017 model to be modded? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would advise against modding, especially on the Switch. I practiced by making several accounts with saves to start at each kingdom. When modding your switch the best you do is save a few minutes when you practice as apposed to this idea, and you run the risk of bricking and missing out on all your updates. I lasted a long time without modding. If you are scared to do it then please don't.

Well that's a relief. I didn't know about profile switching. I'll check it out. Thanks.

Edit: One more thing: After you defeat a boss, doesn't the game autosave so you can't practice a fight again, or not?

You can save right before the fight the save it over another file then just keep loading the save over the different file to practice if that makes sense

Why? If you're careful you won't brick it.

thats the thing you can't really be carefull with modding

modding shouldnt be a problem if you know how to do it and you dont experiment doing strange things with it

@CjaySRC Yes you can. For example, don't do something unless/until you know what it does and you want to do it.

But that means don't do modding, because modding is almost entirely downloading programs off people you don't know and running them without knowing what they will do.

I'm not saying you can't be more/less careful with modding, I'm just saying that I disagree with anyone who thinks modding can be completely safe

To my knowledge, the SMO practice rom doesn't have savestates, which to me, makes it not worth the hassle of modding my Switch. It pales in comparison to SM64 and SMS's practice roms.

I think the best way to practice SMO is to use the other Switch profiles. You have 8 user profiles, which can each have 5 save files. In my experience that's been plenty. Have a profile for each Kingdom you want to practice, save a file right before leaving the previous Kingdom, make 4 copies of that file, and there you go. You have 4 attempts at an IL before you have to make copies again. It takes like 15-30 seconds to make copies maybe.

Some other tips...

When making a practice file, grab all the moons you need to leave, minus one. Dump them. Grab one more moon, save, make copies. This way you only have to watch Mario dump 1 moon at the start of each IL, which saves time.

You can also have profiles with saves right before forks (Wooded/Lake, Snow/Seaside) to save space.

You can also buy a nice outfit in a previous Kingdom so Mario has some swag in your practice/IL file.

yea thats the fastest way for IL grind, but you also could just not care at all about submitting to IL's and prefer to start directly in the kingdom you want to practice lol
