How to easily and consistently beat "The Perfect Run"
Updated 6 years ago by Jerome

So, would you like to get into speedrunning 242 Stars? You feel confident in every star except The Perfect Run? Is this the last star you need to learn to be able to do 602? Look no further!

Before you start...

Please, play as Luigi. It's extremely challenging to beat this star as Mario. Even though noone will play as Mario because this star is post-71, I just feel like I have to point this out.

Sections 1 & 2

These two Sections really do not have anything quite so challenging in them. All I can say is, try not to go too fast in section one. Otherwise you'll just end up hitting a Choppah or a floating mine. Also try to bring Yoshi to the launch star, it can save some time. Although you don't manage to, it's no tragedy. For the second section, try to touch the center blocks as you're walking around.

Section 3

This section also has nothing really hard in it. I would however recommend trying to bring with you as much clouds as you can to the launch star. Ideally, you'll bring two or three. However, don't go back to get the cloud power only because you only have one or none. It's not worth the time.

Section 4

Now, this is where it starts to get tricky. If you are a beginner, do anything BUT try to do this section the intended way. It's just too challenging. What you will do is cancel the spiked sentry beams' attacks. There are two practical ways to do this. You should do super long jumps with the clouds you have remaining (spin and immediately long jump) and then backflip until the end as seen in the video. This will cancel all of their attacks and make everything a lot easier. Do not worry about octopuses though, they won't hurt you.

Section 5

Now, there are way faster strats for this section. By letting go of pull stars early, you can easily skip a lot of this section and I would highly recommend exploring the possibilities. My video simply showed the easiest way to do this section. You should, however, try to go for faster strats as they are very easy and don't take a lot of time to get used to.

Section 6

This section is the one that is going to give you a lot of trouble. So you know, Hammer Bros. throw two hammers at a time, then they jump. It will never change and their positions will pretty much always be the same.

Hammer Bros. 1,2 and 3

The three first hammer bros are inoffensive. Just walk around them.

Hammer Bro 4

This one is not too hard. Just wait for him to have finished his cycle, then jump on his platform, kill him and go on the platform on the left. Be careful about the one on the right that you did not kill, he can be pretty unfriendly.

Hammer Bro 5

This one is probably the hardest because you have to jump on a Flomp to get to him. And the thing is, the Flomp spins right as he ends his cycle and you'll be kicked away if you try to go for the same timing as you went for the last one (as seen in the video). So, I would recommend going for the long jump right as the Flomp stops spinning and killing him instantly after. I find it pretty consistent that way.

Hammer Bro 6 + Boomerang Bros.

Jump on the 6th hammer bro's platform and avoid his hammers. Try to imitate the timing in the video, I really don't know how to explain it. Ideally, you should kill him. It will make everything a lot easier for the last section. However, if you do not manage to kill him, just go straight to the Boomerang Bros. Now, if you manage to kill them the way I killed the two first ones, you'll be okay. If not, as soon as you land on their platform, crouch (and don't stop crouch walking if you didn't kill the 6th hammer bro. you won't avoid his hammers if you stand still). You should then kill them by crouch walking and spinning. I really don't know how to explain it otherwise, just watch the video.

Ending Note

This star will require a lot of practice to be consistent at. Look, I've been playing this game since it was released and I've only really gotten consistent at it not too long ago. To practice, get yourself a bunch of lives and try individual sections on "The Ultimate Test". It has checkpoints so it'll be easy to try out sections you have a hard time on.

Good luck, and have fun with 242!
