Why is the Europeon (PAL) version not used for wr contenders?

I've noticed that in the newer versions of the PAL versions (not ones with NA chips with a PAL region lock chip) Mario moves slightly faster and speeds up slightly faster. So why isn't this used in speedrunning? It is never mentioned in the rules this is disallowed so why isn't it used

Also if you somehow are able to play on an ntsc console it still plays at 60fps not 50fps (though it does make the game like 2x harder)

The physics are rather different on PAL. Tricks such as BBG/FPG, etc. don't work the same either. It's not just the speed. The faster running speed still does not make up for the 17% slower framerate.

JoshKeys has the WR for the PAL version, I'd recommend watching it to see the differences between how NTSC and PAL are played: https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/run/zp0v4xxm

Wasn't the PAL world record by Phoenix_SMM with 4:59?

No, I noticed those and fixed them. It was the NTSC version and the runner marked it as the PAL version and it was overlooked when it was verified.

When I submitted my run I simply selected EUR/PAL because... well, I live in Europe, and I bought my Switch over here. Didn't know about the slower framerate on PAL consoles so I assumed all versions were the same. When my run was verified I realised it had been changed to NTSC, So I switched it back to EUR/PAL and submitted it again. Purely my fault, I'm sorry. Don't blame Dangerous ;)

PAL is (usually) slower because at 50 FPS, that's how many times the timer at the end of the level counts down per second, as opposed to ~60.09 FPS, counting down 60 times per second at the end of the level. That is where the main time loss comes from. Fortunately, due to Mario being faster to make up for lack of FPS, this allows for it to be possible for a machine (TAS) or even an ambitious enough human to do a full FPG (what you see the top players do in 8-2) without using a bullet or any creature on every single level. However, the setup for full FPG currently is so difficult that I would say it is about the same difficulty as pulling off a lightning 4-2 clip. If anyone is willing to do 4 or 5 of these in the same run, then yes, running on PAL version would be much faster than NTSC.

Playing on a PAL cartridge at 60 FPS is banned, otherwise you could beat the game in a whopping 4:02 (at least TAS wise)

I'd like to see that 4:02 video 0.o is there one in existence?

Michigan, USA

@Darpey Unfortunately it was deleted along with zdoroviy antony's channel, however he may still have it backed up on his computer.

Well, it is not really on my computer, but I can recreate it. I would do so anyway, while creating new youtube channel, but I can do it for you now. And I'm not sure that Fceux recreating sound perfectly, but I don't have BizHawk version and I don't think I need to make it.
