I made a brief mention of this in somewes's chat a few weeks ago, but I guess I should probably write it out a bit more thoroughly somewhere more easily referenced.
To save the 8-1 framerule you must:
- Perform a perfect fast acceleration at the beginning of the level
- Manipulate subpixel stuff so you can FPG without slowing down
- FPG
I have explained that you can accomplish step 2 by doing a specific Right->Left->Right wiggle while in the air, but that strat is dumb. somewes said it'd be better if you could manipulate the subpixel stuff just by releasing Right for some number of frames, and he was right.
SO
Instead of doing a midair wiggle, you can achieve workable subpixels by releasing Right for 2 frames while running along the ground. However, the subpixels you end up with can vary. Depending on when you do your Right release you'll be setup somewhere in the range of D50-D80. There is a cycling pattern that relates when your Right release is executed to the subpixels you end up with, but if you do the Right release at no particular time, my observations say you'll get
D80 setup 18.75% (12/64) of the time, D70 setup 7.8125% (5/64) of the time, D60 setup 10.9375% (7/64) of the time, D50 setup 62.5% (40/64) of the time.
Stretches of good frames to begin your Right release (giving you D50-D70 setups) are always at least 7 frames long, so you should be able to find a visual cue somewhere in the level that works for you.
Hopefully this makes sense and hopefully someone finds this useful.
For D80 if you press left early for pole inputs then you can get the FPG, although pressing left earlier could potentially lose the framerule.
I'm pretty sure FPGing off a D80 setup still gets the framerule, but I am not aware of a way to know you're on the D80 setup without the romhack.
yeah, so it would pretty much be just doing it on accident. Although maybe if you knew what the next set of frames from the one you are trying to get (so if you know you were late on your visual queue or something, and you know that gets you D80)
Yes. But D70 frames are always frame perfect and are always preceded by D80 frames, so I personally would prefer to aim more towards the center of a D50-D70 patch and just make sure my flagpole inputs are on point.
Oh interesting! I hope any% gets to the point where top runners are 8-1ing and can recognize and correct a bad initial jump.
That is actually really interesting @xx_420_blazit_xx ... How common is it to get a good speed subpixel for a 2 frame jump, and where should you be aiming release right(~) midair to get the good speed subpixel.
The F and 7 would definitely make saving the framerule a lot easier. Oh and are the inputs for getting good FPG subpixels the same?
Any% (NTSC) runs below 4:57.000 must now fulfill additional requirements in order to be verified.
- The run's full session must be included in the submission description.
- For emulator runs below 4:57.000, some form of input display must be visible for the duration of the run. A hand-cam or input
