@MODS Is it allowed to press L+R to hold nothing on emulator?

So I was just talking with honey_beef, and he had a super big brain idea In 8-3, there is the HappyLee setup. The hard part about this setup is releasing right for 1-3 frames. However, when you play on an emulator such as Nestopia and you use a keyboard, it is very easy to press Left and Right at the same time, so this setting is disabled, and instead what happens is you press nothing. So, the honey_beef big brain idea was, what if, instead of releasing right for 2 frames, you just press left for 2 frames? (so you're holding Left and Right on keyboard for 2 frames, which is effectively nothing since L+R is disabled)

Is this allowed?

I would assume so, seeing as you can do that accidentally.

I don't think so, considering you can't do that on console, so it wouldn't be that fair

yea it’s most likely not allowed due to the fact that it your “controller” needs to be doing/acting the same way as a nes controller also it’s technically left+right, why?: there are three options for left + right settings forbid, priority, and allow the only one that doesn’t do left + right is “forbid” allow is the legit left + right and priority is allowing to press a directional input with the opposite input but it won’t stop Mario like forbid, it will make him go to the direction that you last pressed (when holding) priority is a different way of left + right I assume honey_beef is using priority but I am pretty sure that it’s not allowed KEKW

Forbid setting is what makes this allowed (so when you press Left and Right at the same time, it turns into nothing)

If you want a compromise, instead of doing the right-release with only one finger, you could switch with two fingers for a faster repress. It should be doable on controller so it's 𝓕𝓡𝓔𝓔

Well if you press L+R on controller, the D-pad goes into the middle, not pressing anything, so it should be allowed (?)

After a discussion, it seems we have decided to not allow that. You can't do that and get the same result on console.

How are you going to moderate that, though? Would emu players have to use something like NohBoard to show their inputs or something?

Hm what specifically is disallowed, pressing the left and right buttons simultaneously on keyboard? Just to clarify for dummies like me. :)

I think yes

It is hard to not accidentically do this, for instance when doing fast accel. It is also possible that the speedrunner uses an very low position for his finger on the left button for some later uses, and may cost confusion but is not banned. Anyway it is OK
