8-2 first jump

I have been learning to speedrun this came and have come to 8-2. The first jump up the staircase is supposedly a "piece of cake" yet I struggle to get it at all. Any tips greatly appreciated

If you're playing the pal version of smb, it's not possible to do without slowing down. Make sure you're in ntsc

What's the issue you're having with it? I don't really have enough context to give you suggestions.

I think as said as Ian on PAL version the jump is impossible without slowing down, the problem is even if I do exactly as said in darbs tutorial and other ones to I die to the falling spiney egg

Jump to the second block up, then full jump, then jump as soon as you land on the second from the top.

If it is impossible to do with PAL buy a normal one, $10 on ebay. But what if there is a different strat for that that works? I am not an expert, what even is the problem with the PAL?

The problem with PAL is that it's slower.

If he's playing on console it's not as simple as "buy an NTSC" cart. He would also need an NTSC console.

If he's playing on emulator, then yeah, just get the NTSC rom.

Im on console, so yeah a new console as well, thanks for the advice

I would more suggest an EMU, though. Console + game -> about $65 USB NES controller for EMU -> about $5

You could still buy a console, if you rather would, though..

To add. To what roopert said about it being slower, the fastest submitted PAL run on the leaderboards is 5:11 - and it's nearly flawless, 13ish seconds slower than ntsc. Strats are different and you can see the pause in the 8-2 intro jump

Scotland

Yeah I have checked out that run before and now I notice the pause, thanks though

England

If a 5:11 is nearly flawless in PAL, how is there a PAL TAS that would be 4:51 RTA? I wouldn’t have thought that the TAS-only timesaves (like full flagpole glitch) would be nearly enough to save 20 seconds.

Benjamin, each one of those saves like 5 sec over doing the level normally, and those add up to being faster than NTSC, as well as someother things that are humanly possible, but are way harder on PAL.
