Pipe Jump guidance for new player

I very recently started speedrunning SMB and I'm having a blast, starting to learn the basics and can do 4-2 wrong warp fairly consistently now. However I just can't get to grips with pipe jumps and feel like I've got nothing I'm really aiming for other than just launching Mario towards the pipe and hoping for the best.

Does anyone have any helpful tips for this for a new speedrunning?

Thanks!

Especially if you're new to speedrunning SMB1 I highly recommend to NOT do pipe jumps. It's easy to go little at a time. But what I do is slow down a little bit before the pipe, then jump, land on the pipe for a frame or two, then jump again. For the 3 pipes with no ground (after the star block) I jump to the 2nd pipe once Mario runs over the line between the 2nd last brick, and the final brick. I press left once I am about to land on the pipe, and same as before, jump right after I land on the pipe.

P.S. ~ Don't worry about 4-1 pipe jumps, it doesn't save or lose any time.

And for the easy jumps, jump around 5 - 10 bricks from the pipe, that should do it. GL!

Thanks for the advice Mars, I'm not too fussed about hitting them on 8-1 as I have to fumble my way through that stage anyway and it's far from slick, but I would like to at least nail the pipe jumps in 1-2.

I used to be pretty dang bad at pipe jumps Pipe jumps are pretty difficult when you start out, but keep practicing them This is Kosmic's tutorial how to sub 5 and this section is on 1-2 pipe jumps (note, after you jump off the first pipe you do a full jump, he doesn't mention that in this tutorial) Tbh I did the same thing for 1-2 pipe jumps This is darbian, he has a more in-depth tutorial for them

As for 8-1 pipe jumps, neither tutorial seemed to say much about them, so I'll try and say something I like to jump right up close to them and then jump off of them, and that's as simple as it gets. To be able to do this more consistently is the real question. To do this more consistently, you practice it a bunch, and while you practice, you look at how you messed it up, did you press jump too little? Too much? Too late? Too early? And then after you figure out what you did wrong, do the opposite thing, jump more, jump earlier, etc. You do this a bunch and lots and you will get better, I promise

Flagpole Glitch is one of the tricks I've had the most trouble getting consistent at out of anything else ever in this game, it took me long months of grinding consistently at this trick just to get more consistent, and I even had over one months worth of time in which I didn't improve at all, but I finally figured out why, and that has made me far far better at practicing then I ever have been.

Keep learning, and don't ever quit, no matter what if you want to get to the top ye
