Regularly, most speed runners go for a 369 or a 370; depending on the strat it could change. And it also makes a difference if you got big Mario. Or died at the middle of the stage. We need context! :)
ok, then, here comes the context!
- I didn't get big mario
- I took the shortcut through the coin room at the last tall pipe also, I didn't die
You must not be doing the route correctly, or are using the wrong rom. If you don't get powerups and take the coin shortcut, a time of 360 means you wasted roughly 3 seconds somewhere, which in 1-1 is really bad, even for a new player.
A time of 369 is very achievable even for a new player with a little practice. Watch videos of any run on the leaderboards under 5 minutes, and copy what they do (except the fastest 4 runners who do a glitch at the end... Just jump to the top of the flagpole instead of the bottom like they do for a complicated glitch)
Maybe you're doing the coin section wrong? You have to let off right at the beginning or you'll bump the wall and lose time
