Misc. Categories on the Leaderboards

A few people have suggested giving some misc. categories (45 and 31 star mainly, but possibly others) another chance on the leaderboards. They were previously on the leaderboards but removed because of inactivity.

I personally think there's very little reason for having categories on the leaderboards (even under misc.) if the leaderboards aren't being used. 45 and 31 star are both unpopular and illegitimate, pointless categories. However, I also think that a category absolutely deserves a spot if runners will make the leaderboard active, regardless of whether it's a joke category or not, and I see no reason to not at least give these categories a trial period.

The biggest downside to doing this is that it potentially opens the door for other shit categories. Like, I do All Coins, and I see no valid reason why 45 star is a more legitimate category than All Coins. If 45 star is on the leaderboards, then I absolutely want All Coins to get a chance as well.

So, where does it stop? If a category only needs to be popular and semi-legitimate in order to justify a spot on the leaderboards, then are we going to have to add shit like BST and other awful categories in order to remain consistent?

Thoughts?

edit: oh there was also some discussion about moving 1 star, maybe 16 star to misc. if we did add misc. categories

I don't know what people will agree on in terms of which deserve to be there but either way, if the activity of the categories doesn't significantly increase then they should be removed again.

I think adding a misc category will end up cluttering up the misc tab - since, as you point out, awful meme-categories are commonplace in SM64. A bunch of inactive categories that at one point was popular has their own site, atwiki: https://www31.atwiki.jp/sm64/

My best proposition would be linking to the atwiki pages in resources, one for each "misc", that way no one is confused about it being in Japanese.

Giving power to pointless categories isn't per say an issue, but I see no valid reason to add things that have less than 10 runs in the past 4-5 years. If people really wish for these categories to be a thing, then that should be shown more in how many people have done runs of it. And if it's because people are unaware they exist, that imo proves the point that they're pointless categories, since it's not like that leaderboard on srcom is the only valid source of finding out about runs.

I personally wouldn't mind having 31/45 in LB and would even go so far as to help add the already existing runs from atwiki.

I tried to think about points which speak in favor of adding the categories, just because in my opinion it's neat to have them all on one place but there aren't really strong points in favor of them, however neither are there any strong points against them. Objectively, the only good point I can think of is conveniency, in regards to looking up a run but especially in putting a run on the leaderboard.

I don't think that because of a misc button other meme categorys will ever be added on it, because there is no demand from the community to add them in the first place. 31/45 have an embedded place in the history of speedrunning SM64 and they have been on the leaderboards before, hence why people want them back on.

I would like to see 31/45 Star under the miscellaneous tab. Although these categories are not popular, it would be nice to have them displayed on the same page as all other categories for convenience. Also a lot of people don't even know the atwiki leaderboards exist.

I strongly support the idea of making a separate game for all of the junk categories.

I think 45 Star and All Coins would be fine for misc categories and 31 Star could even be a regular one since its just like 16 star and 1 star an old any% time. 31 Star used to be the fastest way to beat the game before mips clip was found. 16 Star used to be the fast way before SBLJ was found.

I personally want to run 31 star but cant cuz it's not official, whats the harm in adding a category like that. If it is such a hassle make a new game called Super Mario 64 Memes for all of the "unofficial categories"

You can run whatever you want dude. The fact that there's no leaderboard shouldn't stop you lol. I run All Coins fairly frequently and there's never been a leaderboard for it.

Misc categories are not real, they are just made up for convenience or fun. Just like the EMU and VC discussion I don't see why they shouldn't exist on the leaderbord... they never hurt anyone. They were just there for people who wanted to try something new. Removing them in the first place was a little bit of an "elitist" move in my opinion. If people wanna run 30/31 star or 45 star (which I think were the most popular ones) and they put a lot of work into it, regardless of whether we think it's irreverent or not, they should have a place to show off their work. Misc categories exist in all games and I don't see why SM64 can't.

On a side note, 16 star doesn't make any sense as a real category technically. It should be moved to misc, but since it's been such a loved category for so long it stays. It's not any% anymore, that has been taken up by 0/1 star. It's not any% (no major glitches) because it uses BLJ's. It's kinda in the middle of no major glitches and any%, because for some reason the category allows LBLJ but not the BLJ that gets you into fire sea, which if you think about it sounds like the rules of a misc category. As for 1 star, just like you can submit a 16 star run with 17 stars (usually by getting the mips star by accident), it should be merged with 0 star, because it is the one true any%.

Do you think we should make room for categories that very, very few people run? Not just a small amount of runs, but a small amount of updated runs? I don't find removing sections of the leaderboard that no one bothers to use elitist at all.

I agree that 16 star makes no sense, but it's one of the most popular speedruns of ¤any¤ game. That's why it deserves a spot on the current leaderboard, even though we don't have misc.

Like I said earlier it shouldn't really matter how many people will, or does currently run the misc categories. They do no harm on the leaderbords so why not. I think if we make the misc categories again it will motivate more people to try them.

United States

So, if it's irrelevant how many players runs a category for it to be on the leaderboard, what's the cut off for what categories are allowed? All Coins okay? 100 Unique Lives? All Signs? How about BST? 22 star?

Canada

Yeah I agree just because there could be misc categories doesn't mean every possible meme should be on there. We know that 31 star and 45 star are the most popular misc categories, followed by all coins I assume, so those would be good to add. Thankfully only mods can add new categories so I know you won't add in the rest of the terrible meme categories like all signs% etc. I have seen a few people run the categories I've mentioned above but I have never seen an all signs run, we should decide to put our foot down on how many misc categories there should be as a community.

"We know that 31 star and 45 star are the most popular misc categories, "

You just said the popularity shouldn't be a factor in what categories we allow on the leaderboard. Now it is?

Why is 45 star a more legitimate category than any of the other categories I've listed? Why is it more deserving than All Signs or 100 Unique Lives?
