The only reason you could not use it is if you map analog button input to digital for what I know |

That's perfectly fine, although you might find yourself having some trouble with the unnotched analog stick. Pretty sure you can use any controller you want as long as it doesn't have turbo, anyone else is is free to clarify whether or not I'm right about that. |

You may do that but the issue is the setups as already mentioned. One example is cannonless. I think I'd be pretty inconsistent as a little deviation from holding the stick straight down is enough to make you fail. Stuff like that is really annoying and frustrating. You could get a USB n64 controller from amazon and try that. One bonus is that you get a great controller for 2d sidescrolling games. It has become my default emulation vintage controller because of the nice d-pad. It's an investment for more than just SM64. |

you could also use a gc controller, it has the notches, and just generally feels good |
