"No killing any enemies or having enemies die even if it’s not directly from mario."

So basically the moment a goomy spawns you're screwed.

Besides that, a lot of the restrictions seem more like mild annoyances/inconveniences than actual challenges (no breaking crates, no breaking gates, no surfing on Bloopers, no getting dragged by the Cheep Cheep, no melting ice, no riding wooden boats).

Thread: So how much slower is the NTSC-U version?

Started by: cureabeescureabees

NTSC-U only loses about 15 seconds to PAL and NTSC-J for Any%. The difference becomes more significant for longer categories since NTSC-J loads Delfino Plaza faster. I don't think it's ever been fully timed, but you're looking at around a minute for 120 Shines.

Holding down the A press from selecting a shine or closing a save prompt doesn't carry over into normal gameplay. If you want to steal terminology from the SM64 A Button Challenge, you can think of them as terminating A presses.

Even if it did, holding A serves very little purpose in SMS. It allows you to flutter off of ledges with Yoshi, but that doesn't really help unless you don't want to count A presses from save prompts and eat the pineapple blocking Sirena rather than doing Sirena early. It also speeds up textboxes fwiw, but that has no bearing on how levels are played.

It's also adorable that you think that Noki hasn't seen ABC videos before

I was able to do the start of Sirena 2 by using a rollout to break one of the bricks, then rolling out into wallkicks to climb up. No issue there.

The end of Gelato 1 is actually the easy part to do without A (though I suppose rollouts would simplify things a lot), you just need to do the sand block upwarp to get to the shine.

And you absolutely can do Gelato Skip without jumping, you use a Cataquack to get onto the roof.

1) These forums are relatively inactive, if you want to contact a moderator you're better off doing it directly or by asking in the Discord.

2) There's no reason for the mods to add a category that no one has run (and to be quite honest, very few people are likely to run).

Also, I don't know whether you intended to include wall jumps in the "allowed" section, but doing so (in combination with allowing rollouts) removes just about any situation I can think of that would require jumping. For instance, you could escape the box at the start of the Noki 6 secret by just rolling out into a series of wallkicks, which wouldn't be penalized under your ruleset.

The current any% TAS does this. It does save a small amount of time by allowing the cutscene to start earlier, but it doesn't skip it entirely.

You can use the practice code generator (http://gct.zint.ch/) to setup a fast any% code with whichever levels you want. Just be sure to choose "Yes" from the Stage Loader menu.

Thread: Does region matter aside from text speed in 20 Shines?

Started by: JasperJasper

Ezra, please do everyone a favor and stop giving advice to people if you don't actually know what you're talking about. Importing a Wii is completely unnecessary, you can Homebrew your Wii to region-free it, that way you can play any version of the game regardless of the console you're playing it on.

Gotta love it when people who don't run the game throw out random timings rofl

Edit: And to answer your question, the only thing in 20 shines that should be different on English is that you can't clean off the chomplets in Pianta 1 with a ground pound/rollout hover like you can on JP.

Thread: Japanese vs. English - what glitches work on each version?

Started by: SwordlessLinkSwordlessLink

As far as any% is concerned, the only difference glitch-wise is that non-JP versions allow you to do fruit storage, which makes EYG both easier and faster, since you don't have to make the Stus attack you in order to dismount Yoshi and throw the papaya through the gate. The physics of ejecting off of Yoshi are also different on JP, meaning that you can do a slightly faster strat at the end of Ricco 8 in 79 and 96 shines. You can also do a version of Gelato Skip in Episode 6 with Yoshi for Hoverless and No Major Skips on JP that saves a small amount of time over doing Gelato 6 normally.

This glitch is a result of the practice codes, it's not something that can happen in the standard game.

Thread: New Category Suggestion

Started by: SnowyParkerSnowyParker

I took some time to route some levels for fun, and it comes down to one of a few scenarios.

1) There is a fairly straightforward way to progress with no A presses.
2) If there is no straightforward way to do it, there's probably a way to rocket buffer to help you out.
3) Otherwise, the remaining A presses are incredibly unlikely to be saved.

Part of the appeal of the ABC for SM64 is the incredible amount of tricks and techniques at their disposal. You have PU movement, cloning, and a whole host of other mechanics that make those videos almost more of SM64 science, as opposed to just a quirky playthrough. As of right now, no really wacky mechanics exist in SMS, so it mostly consists of a lot of dives and hovers through the levels. While initial optimizations might be interesting, I doubt there will be much room for improvement.

Edit: Also a friendly reminder that a 120 run would have like 400 A presses just from blue coin/shine save prompts and shine selection alone.

The main problem with this is how arbitrary it is. Part of the appeal of the SM64 A Button Challenge is the fact that you could start from a clean file and collect every star while pressing A less than 30 times, menus and all. The fact of the matter is that this run would have more A presses than the entirety of SM64 120 star. While I would be curious to see how certain levels could be optimized, there likely wouldn't be much interest in doing runs of this. Even the SM64 videos are clearly made with the intent of being demonstrations first and are not advertised as speedruns. Don't let the lack of a leaderboard discourage you from going forth with this, though.

Thread: 20 Shines Hoverless Route Optimization (No Pianta Village)

Started by: samgodro43samgodro43

I realize that most people will have no interest in this, but I figured I'd post this here anyway. I decided to pick up 20 shines hoverless because it was relatively short and had some cool tricks and movement in it. Unfortunately, the only run I could base a route off of is zelpikukirby's current record, which enters Pianta early hoverless, which is quite tricky. Because of this, I decided to do my own route that avoids Pianta completely. The route I'll link to here is the result of some tinkering around, and though I think it's solid for what it is, I'm open to suggestions if someone has an idea to make it better. Feel free to either reply to this post or leave a comment on the spreadsheet with any thoughts. For reference, I've also included zelpiku's route and PB video.
Worst case scenario, nothing becomes of this and it serves as a route for anyone interested in picking up this category.

P.S. You should definitely consider giving the category a shot, as much of a meme as it might sound 🙂

Edited both routes to account for recent optimizations. (August 2017)
