Now that I have access to custom characters, and thus Banshee cry at level 1, that cuts off a whole 3 minutes of leveling that I was doing before. Also, I've noticed that the higher your level, the more buffed the enemies are. That puts even more importance to shortening your route because the excess XP from random encounters also makes future fights longer and more dangerous for your army.
