Greetings! Accidentally discovered a way to save up to 1.5 seconds in each race. If putting the game on pause after loading a race immediately, as seems possible, followed by a resumption after the appearance of "PAUSED", the time at the finish will be about 1.5 seconds less than normal. As far as I managed to figure out, the amount of "cut" time is not affected by any bike or race, but only how early the game was suspended. Also, please note that in a normal game, the in-game timer starts 1.533-1.616 (91-97 frames) seconds earlier than the girl gives the go-ahead and bikes begin to move.
It would be interesting to know the opinion of other participants regarding the status of such runs. Is this a new category or not? Thanks.
Video comparing regular and "Start glitch" races:
rules only seem to mention title screen glitches, so i would imagine this is legal. would like a mod to confirm though.
Runner of another Road Rash, but a general question: the paused run in the video appears to be slower than the normal one, so you aren´t any faster in reality. Is the point of speedrunning this game to get a faster run or to just pretend to have a faster time (by manipulating the in-game timer in this case)?
@Frika Yes, IGT was introduced to have basically a "reliable" loadless time. The issue I'm trying to bring up here is that by manipulating the IGT you just circumvent the reason why it was introduced in the first place. You will now have your times displayed as faster, but your actual performance is the same or slower. That makes no sense from a speedrun perspective where actual faster performance counts.
I feel like the community should have a vote on which method of calculating time they prefer. This new manipulation of the IGT is not in the spirit of speed running in my opinion, but I also see the benefits of using IGT and am unsure which way I would vote at this time. An example I find myself referencing would be the golden eye community which uses IGT and to my knowledge allows players to optimize the IGT. They have runs that have faster RTA, but are lower on the leaderboards because they had a slower IGT. Ultimately I am interested to see if this community find this new discovery to be too much of a nuisance to continue to use IGT.
Agreed. I would be willing to add an additional rule stating that using pause during a race is not prohibited. If everyone agrees with Anko's idea just let me know and I'll make it so.
It's a pretty interesting glitch, considering how little amount of glitches there actually are in the game. Probably not necessary to make it's own category for it either. Best idea would to prohibit it to be used in a run for the sake of the leaderboards.
