C64 Version and IL Runs

Hi,

I did for fun a run of the first level on the C64 (which is way shorter then on the Amiga) and I dont want to grind the whole game (I hate the egypt level) at the moment, so I just wanna to know if you can please add IL runs as well and maybe seperate them by Systems. Would be great if that is possible. You can check out my run here:

Thanks and great run on the Amiga, I was never able to beat this without a trainer back then.

It seems you can not start on each individual level, like it is possible in some of the Amiga versions. I don't know if individual level runs make sense without this. You would still have to start from the beginning every time or use a save state for a later levels.

Hi,

thanks for the reply. Yes this was also coming to my mind. For the C64 Version there is a Trainer available to select each stage, but dont know if thisis also possible for the Amiga version. I just know that there is a cheat which lets you continue the last level: Type "pooky" at the high score screen = Continue from last level. Maybe it would make sense to request the C64 version as its own game on src due to is difference in total screen you have to complete.

I think using any form of trainer or cheat code is not something that should be used to play a game for speedrunning even if it has no effect on the actual time. Someone who owns the original and plays on original hardware should be able to do runs too without some ridiculous setup. That would not allow using trainers or save states for runs. The cheat code would work on the original version, but you would have to play up to that level every time before you can do level runs using the code. For the Amiga there are different official versions of the game, one which has the level select built in.

I think it is not needed to make it it's own game, you can just split the leaderboard by platform, like it was done for Paperboy, if the versions are so different, that you can not compare the times.

I know it is a hard game and I have only finished a few runs myself, but I think that is not a good enough reason to setup IL leaderboards. Otherwise you could make IL leaderboard for almost every game that has levels.

Hi

  1. I totally agree on your point about using original hardware. Using Trainers/Cheatcodes is up to the different Leaderboards and comunities here on src, Snoopy for the C64 for example allow Trainers to beat the highest difficulty. This is really something every speedrunning comunity has to decide by themself, but of course accept if no trainers in any kind should be used for Rick Dangerous.

  2. This really depends most of the time the game leaderborads will be split if the versions are to different what is comon but sometimes they dont do and point out that you better should request this as its own game. There is no exact rule how to proceed with this. If you would split up the board here into the different versions that would be really great. C64 has way less screens to solve and is of course shorter then the Amiga version.

  3. I just hate the 2nd level in Egypt :D Well pretty sure that most games that consist of Levels also have an IL Leaderboard it not that unusual, but of course for RD it would be very grindy and not worth it thats right.

Okay lets see how long it will take me to submit a fullgame run. Still impressive that you managed to beat it.

Well, basically I'm currently the whole community, so I'm open for arguments. Most games that I run don't have individual levels. For now I think that it only makes sense if the game has an option to play levels individually.

I will make sure the runs will be organized into categories that make sense, when you submit a run.

An IL level board would be cool, but I agree that on the C64 it would require a hacked version of the game which doesn't seem to be in the spirit of speedrunning. When it comes to level 1 off this game I'm yet to see a faster run than this one though 😊. I haven't seen anyone else using my trigger trap to shoot the last two enemies which saves you the time it takes to pick up the bullets earlier in the level.

Managed to shave off another second, now sub 1:50. Also working on an optimized level 2 route. Feeling more keen on an IL leaderboard ;) @Reboot if you need a moderator running the IL leaderboard I will happily volunteer.

Very nice Level 1 run! I didn't know there was a poison arrow in that place where you shoot the last two enemies so might use that technique myself...

I'm not sure if the mods intend to add ILs for this game... In the meantime maybe you could submit a full game run for the C64? My run has lots of mistakes so should be easy enough to beat!

Hi John,

Thank you, means a lot coming from you!

I am working on it ;) My level 2 is currently at 4:21, but I will release that video in a few days. It includes a few things I haven't seen elsewhere either. Please find inspiration in my routes. The hardest part of my level 1 route is the first 2 kills on 'screen 2'. The timing has to be perfect to get down the first ladder in time. Getting that part right saved me the .5 second I needed to get below 1:50. I think there is another second to be shaved off. I got stuck on the one ladder for a split second plus I have seen a trigger 'glitch' that might make it possible to get under the falling arrows without waiting, but I am yet to reproduce it.

Guys .. found a secret in level 1. This restart running level 1 all over. Just took of 4 seconds of my previous run, and this one wasn't even as precise. Tested this on original hardware as well.

Denmark

The timing and positioning is very tight, but I am now able to reproduce it every run.

I will put together a prober explaination and how to video tomorrow.

The level 1 'portcullis' bypass HOWTO. Btw this is also doable on the amiga version. I have tested it.

Plus did a 1:43. That will be my last level 1 run for a while. Now I will focus on the full game. Only if @Reboot desides for an IL leader board will I look at level 1 again.

Did a 13:04 as well which includes a 1:42 level 1

Amazing! Are you going to submit the full game runs to the SRC? BTW I feel for a full game run you should not pause the clock between levels but just let it run continuously.

Hi John,

I submitted my first runs 3 weeks ago but life has been busy for Reboot, so I offered to take over as moderator which I now am. I take your point, and have adjusted my run time to reflect the realtime clock. I will update the games rules so it is clear.

I will probably upload a run without all the chatting then ;) I was busy creating a ASL script for Rick Dangerous 2 but I will modify that accordingly.
