Transition Between Alt and Tank Controls

Hey Everyone,

I just started running and I'm trying to do Jill-Any%-New Game.

From my understanding, stair skating can only be done with tank controls whereas movement seems best suited to the alt controls (which are a challenge to get used to with camera transitions on their own). Where I seem to be having the biggest issue is jumping from the analog stick back to the d-pad (Xbox One Controller) when I need to stair skate.

Basically, is that transition necessary or is there a way I can do stair skating naturally with the analog stick and not changing inputs with a program?

If it is necessary, does anyone have maybe a video demonstrating how they do it?

I have heard of maybe Bawkbasoup and Pessimism doing the analog skate but wasn't sure how they accomplished.

I appreciate your help, everyone. This seems like a great community!

Hello. Stair skating can only be done with tank controls. The analog skating you mention is banned in regular runs and only legal in DS runs and can only be done on a PS4 controller via input mapper as far as I know. Tank controls (dpad) is used a lot more than alt controls. I recommend just practicing switching between the two as fast as you can. It will take time to get used to and the same can be said for stair skating. Welcome to the community and be sure to ask questions if you need help!

As Pessi stated, analog skating is only allowed via Door Skip mod and really the best thing is just practice getting used to switching between tank and alt at the necessary moments and it'll become 2nd nature and you'll get used to the movement, for me when I know I am doing tank controls and know that I will have to switch to alt almost immediately, I'll have my index finger on my analog stick ready for when my thumb is done stair skating. That's just me, I'm sure other runners have their own set up with their hands.

Appreciate it!

@Pessimism: That's kind of what I had gathered but just wanted to make sure. It seems like just figuring out which sections suit what control scheme best, like using tank control for the hall after the plant chems (at least in my case). I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some secret move.

Great run at GDQ btw. Did an awesome job!

@wesker32: I'll have to keep that in mind. Of course with anything, practice and personal preference prevail. Appreciate the info!

Thanks for being welcoming, everyone!

It's helpful to use arrange controls in my opinion and mainly using the dpad to move and the analog to dodge and do quicker 180s or at least that's what I do

@Ruzka: I've been trying to get myself to use the alt controls for turning and then jumping back to tank controls just because I fail horribly on camera changes. That being said, I think I just need to get accustomed to using the alt controls on rooms with quick turns and then tank for anywhere with just left and right movement. It's all just a matter of trial and error.

I've been grinding the movements and trying to quick shoot because pretty much all of my runs get botched on the dog collar and murder hall right now. I've barely even touched the run after the death masks. All a part of starting out!

Also, something to keep in mind since Wesker brought it up, but some rooms can either be done with tank or alt and all depends on preference. Some rooms have a quintessential method, but others are more flexible depending on what you feel is best for you. There's a lot in this game where you do exactly this, at this exact time, with this exact execution. But there's a lot of adaptability! You'll learn that with more hours in the game and find what is best for you.

Hope you enjoy the community here! Always plenty of information to pass around

Edit: I know I'm a day late. Busy, busy, busy LUL

I also am new to the community(just started learning the run yesterday)and I'm so bad at the game. I keep screwing up zombie dodges lol I have only managed to get up to the dog and then I get rekt. Needless to say, I am excited to get the timing and strats down to make progress!! With that being said, does anyone have any specific examples of when would be good times to switch between alt and tank controls using the arranged control scheme? I like to learn things very precisely, especially initially. I'm gonna continue to watch speedruns to learn the route and get the strats down but just figured I would ask this while I'm here! I don't want to be a burden asking this question, but I appreciate any responses with it! Also, are there any strats or tips that a complete noob at speedrunning this game should know or be doing? Thanks again in advance!

No burden. Ask questions! We're here to help all the newcomers.

Personally, I'd recommend sticking to tank controls as much as possible starting out, only switching to analog to bait/dodge zombies. It's often the easiest and sometimes only way to consistently get around zombies in the game. But for most other movement it's awful. I wouldn't worry about trying to optimize by peppering in more analog movement until later on. It's not worth it. I made the mistake of using analog too much when I started running.

How can I switch between the different controls without having to go to the menu every time I want to do it? I like the original control, but sometimes I think it's better to use the new controls, for a few seconds but I can not without entering the menu and doing it ...

Hi there, Galhrrera.

Set your controls to alternate. You can then use the new controls with your L Stick and the classic controls with your D-pad.

Hope that helps. :)

Ty Eric: I want to confirm something: I do not have control of Xbox or PS4, I only have a couple of generic controls, ok? the controls menu gives me 2 options, each with different types, ok? With the option of ORIGINAL controls I only have tank movement, either with Dpad or with joystick. With the option ALTERNATE I only have new controls with dpad and joysticks. At no time I get what they say so much "if you use alternating will you have tank moves with dpad and new movements with joystick". What I want to confirm is: Do I have a problem with any other configuration or I have the game broken?? Thank you

I'm playing with controller but it's not of Xbox or Ps4, it's generic, similar to PS2
