What are the differences between 60FPS and 30FPS?

And how much faster is one compared to the other?

North Carolina, USA

Firstly, on 60Fps you can't do most of the important out of bounds glitches, loading times and inventory times are faster, and enemies are more aggressive. Second, we don't know exactly how much faster 60Fps is, but it is definitely faster than 30Fps.

Would exiting to main menu during the run to switch for certain chapters be worth it outside of segmented?

Arizona, USA

Nah since we do the in game timer instead of RTA

Germany

So since the OOB Glitches are on 30 FPS, then running it on 60 FPS would essentially be slower while it is technically faster?

^ I ask like this because that is currently going on in my mind and, well, mind go boom.

Arizona, USA

We actually thought that for the longest time, but once Morse started pushing the category to its max, the load times are just too good and make up for the lost time from doing no oobs (plus more, 60 fps ng pro is about a minute faster than 30 fps)

ah, that clears things up o/ thanks JTB :)

JTB is right, 60 fps is faster. When i started running the game, i was thinking 60 fps was slower because of no glitches. But it's a wrong idea.

Glitches in this game don't save a lot. It's about 1min40.

In 60 fps, you will save more time than this, for several reasons:

  • Loading times are about 0.20 sec faster per door (loading between 0.80 sec to 1sec max compare to 1.20 in average for 30 fps, these are estimations if i remind correctly ¤ Inventory is loading 0.20 sec faster as well.

  • Animations are faster such as (Shooting, half quick turn, text scrolling etc).

  • Ennemies seem to despawn faster as well.

  • Some tricks are faster in 60 fps such as the incendary grenade. You only need to throw 4 I.G instead of 5 on mendez, because they are doing more DPS.

etc.

So in the end, 60 fps will save more than 1min40 sec. I estimate 60 fps being between 40 to 1min faster, but to be sure, we will need time to calculate everything.

For clarification on my previous question, is it not faster to switch framerates mid-run for chapters which would yield the advantage (like that one chapter with the huge glitch on the lisland) and then switch back, or is that not allowed because of in-game time ruling?

France

You can do that, but it will no longer be considered as a Single Segment Run, so the run won't be legit anymore. To switch framerates, you have to exit the game, return to the main menu to switch the framerate, and then load the chapter. Blaze made a multi segment run where he does that.

It would be obviously faster to do that.

So, if I were to do that then I suppose I'd submit a run under segmented then?

Another question on segmented vs single segment

How come you're allowed to pause the game/timer, and restart via the menu in single segment?

North Carolina, USA

It's a tactical restart. For example: at the start of 5-2 there are about 7 enemies outside of the spawn room. If you reset the checkpoint as soon as you spawn 2 of the enemies de-spawn. The only drawback is that you loose a certain amount of time depending on what version you're running. This can be done at a number of spots, but the only people who typically use these resets are NG Pro runners. Hope i helped :)

United States

Which versions actually lose you time during a tactical reset? Are you saying that just in general (like the timer is still counting), or does the timer actually reset on some versions?

North Carolina, USA

Yeah, the timer still counts. The only thing that stops it is the pause menu (not to be confused with the inventory).

United States

I don't see why pausing the game would be allowed in single segment at all, even if it is a tactical restart, since what I described earlier (going to the menu, changing framerate, going back) seems to be in the same line as tactical restarting, since I'm not reverting the timer at all, I don't really see why it would be separated into segmented.

Arizona, USA

speedrun.com being gay and logging me out mid-post, wtf

anyways, you can only change the frame rate from the main menu, so you would have to save the game and quit out to change it. that's the main reason why it's considered segmented and how it differs from doing a checkpoint restart

United States

I don't think it really classifies as segmented, it's not like I'm re-loading a save, just loading. I only see it as an elongated pause, since that's all it really is.

Austria

If you would "ban" the option menu, 95% of all runs would be not legal anymore. The option menu is on the same button as the skip option for cutscene. So, would a run not be valid anymore, just cause you hit pause on incident when you try to skip a cutscene?

The checkpoint reset was always a legit option in this game. Yes the menu itself pauses the timer, but you still lose time from reloading over all. The timer continues again while the loading screen that you get. Also for New Game runs resets like this are very important cause it changes the outcome of same room. For example: In the Water Hall in Chapter 3-1 you do the checkpoint reload after Ashley tells you about the 2 cranks. You could do it without the reset, sure. But have fun protecting Ashley from the Zealots going after her AND dealing with the scythe enemies that just spawned moments ago.

I guess the checkpoint reload is more an option that you can take, if you wanna be more safe in an upcoming area. You trade in a few seconds with the reload for a much saver run. The game is already random enough, so I'm really happy about this option.

Hope that explains a bit why we are totally fine with such "resets" :)
