You need to buy a legitimate copy of RE2R.

The mods here aren't ever going to actually recommend that you go get anything other than a legal copy. They aren't telling you that you can't use an illegal copy, they're just giving you the only answer they CAN give - which is to buy a legal copy. If you choose to obtain an illegal copy of the game and use that to run with, that's entirely on you.

Just be aware that sometimes changes are made to illegal copies that make it obvious you aren't using a legitimate copy and therefore your run can be rejected. For example: some illegal copies of Silent Hill 2 for PC contain fixes that were made by people online. The problem is, those fixes are banned. But since the copy certain runners had didn't note anywhere that it used mods from online, those runners had no idea they were using a copy of the game that would make their runs illegitimate. Times got removed from the board and certain runners had to re-do their runs with a legitimate copy of the game.

Stuff like that is why the majority of mods for a game will never recommend that you use anything other than a legitimate copy. It saves them from companies coming down on them for recommending piracy and it saves you from having your runs removed from the board if you used some modded illegal copy.

Now answer me. How many of those runs are played on a legitimate games and pirated ones? There is no control over this... Well, Just If the moderators Go to steam profile of the players and check the game there....

I have no idea how many runs are done on legal versus illegal copies. Neither do the mods usually. That's not the point. The point is, occasionally an illegal copy will have modifications made to it that may make your runs invalid. The best way to ensure that your runs never get removed from the board are to run a legal copy of the game.

Does that mean you can't run an illegal copy? No, of course not. And the mods may not be able to tell if you're using an illegal copy. And your runs might be on the leaderboard forever. But what if the illegal copy you download makes Claire and/or Leon run 2X faster than normal? And maybe you don't notice. But the mods do. And your runs get removed from the board. Then you're back at square one.

It doesn't matter how many people use an illegal copy of the game. What matters is - are you ok with the risk of possibly having your runs invalidated by using an illegal copy? If you're ok with it then I guess that's your answer because I seriously doubt they're going to go through the effort of checking your steam profile to see if you own the game or not.

That's the mod job (i think): analyze the runs and check If everythink is ok with that.

Any modifications done to a version can be done with or without it being a legit copy or not. Especially not knowing how the illegal copy was obtained. An illegal copy could be the exact same version released on day 1.

I have 3 legal copies of re2r. pc, psn, and xbox. The point isnt how you should obtain a copy but how to tell the difference between a legal and illegal copy. Im always about supporting those who create things that hog all of my time. Some people dont have the resources to do so. Since re2r sales met capcoms requirement to move on with a new remake. It shouldnt matter any more to anyone but capcom.

Every single game has runs ran on illegal copies.
