My Run Is Losing Time To Loading/Camera Angle Changes

So recently I've been running Claire A on GCN, on my Wii for past week or so. I noticed when I started PB'ing and comparing to other runs on the leaderboards (most noticeably Jake Tabor's 1:07:27 run) that it seemed I was much slower than I should have been overall. Even though my run seemed to be not much different and even quite better at some parts. I finally started investigating and doing some serious comparing side by side and checking. Even at times letting Jake's run get ahead of mine and he would ALWAYS catch up and pull ahead of mine even though there was no difference.

I figured out that I am losing time on some loading/camera angles changes. When I am playing a lot of the time camera angle changes stall a sec or so for me before transitioning and my Wii makes sounds like it is loading. It isn't fluent at all and this is SUPER FRUSTRATING to lose time to something totally out of my control when I am deserved a much better time. I tried cleaning my game disc, I cleaned my Wii a bit, also making some room. This didn't seem to help at all. Any ideas at all would GREATLY be appreciated. I have a launch day Wii so it is rather old. Hoping that's not the problem because buying a whole new Wii just for a dumb issue like this is really offputting.

I know something like black Wii's are meant to run faster or something like that. I had the same issue I believe back in the day when I ran Leon A on GC and I tried using GC console itself instead of Wii to see if that fixed the problem but always there was no RTA time gain and I don't think it helped. Thank you.

So I hooked up my Gamecube again and decided to do some testing. Very interesting, this time I did notice some substantial changes.

I did a practice run until I got a decent enough one that wasn't perfect but got the job done. Up to spade key I was about 10-11 seconds ahead of my PB with almost NO changes. Later by Chief Irons office I was 20 seconds ahead, then by the cogwheel room with licker I was over 25 seconds ahead. So yeah something must be wrong with my Wii and the laser reading the disc. I don't think my Gamecube is great or anything, I mean it's still pretty old, but the results speak for themselves. I guess I'll be running on Gamecube console from now on then. Although I literally just tonight ordered Japanese RE2 for gamecube tonight online and was planning to run it instead of English when I got it on my Wii with a region changer. But if my Wii is gonna give me that much of a RTA loss that most likely adds onto the IGT, no clue what I'll do. Might have to get a Japanese Gamecube? Any other ideas that I'm missing? Maybe Wii will read the JP disc better? Idk.

Anyone have any idea what setup most people use to run RE2 JP?

IGT pauses between camera angles. RTA is completely useless to measure with when it comes to RE2 (especially for GCN) so comparing side by side won't work. You have to compare the quality of the runs on a room by room basis.

England

If you use Dolphin and the IGT Autosplitter you can see how the IGT works, it does pause briefly on camera transitions so you won't be losing IGT from that.

Oh wow I had no idea, that's a HUGE relief. There is still some small stuff though like I noticed some loading scenes/stuff loads faster like the opening cutscene/text when starting a new game and some menu stuff. Will that factor in either? I think to be safe atm I'll still play on GC and see if I notice any results. When JP version shows up though I'll play on Wii. Thanks!

I'm not sure what's exactly up with the opening cutscene stuff.

For example, in my run the first trigger to skip to the text is after the FMV's already been showing for 1-2 seconds, and it cannot be skipped any earlier even with fast mashing. Whereas yours (and many others), you don't even see the FMV at all. No idea there.

I did this a few years ago to have time differences recorded for the GC version. The RTA gap is pretty huge lol. You don't have to worry about it since the IGT runs differently than RTA. There doesn't seem to be an advantage with emulator from my experience (I didn't record as much data as I wanted to), but I know a few people who have ran on the new Dolphin versions with better times than me.

Thanks Roofress that's pretty interesting stuff! So yeah I did a run today on GC that saved a ton of time but ended around the same a run usually would. I didn't notice any IGT differences or oddities really. So back to Wii and ended up getting a 1:07:54. So will just keep at it. That google doc is pretty interesting and useful! Been reading through it, thanks man :) I truly appreciate the help all.

@Liv, I've noticed this issue of opening fmv's not even starting for some people (ie goes straight to game from Leon/Claire crash) whereas I have to skip the cutscene and it matters not how fast I do it (I can even leave the start/skip button held down) and it'll still play a few seconds before skipping. Why is that? Anyone know? Does it add time to my run? Thx for any info in advance ??

We disable the FMV's in regedit. This is allowed because IGT stops counting when a FMV's is active. Search for Regedit in windows and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\CAPCOM\BIOHAZARD 2 PC\MovieEnable (set this to 0)

Same with me, I was referring to running on the PS version (on a PS2, if that matters.)
