I found something! do I have to share?

I just finished a game casually today. During my play, I accidentally skipped something. (discovering speed strats). As per my custom, when I finish a game, I come here to watch the speedrun. However, The skip I found was not used, nor even mentioned on the game page. The last run was over 6 months ago and the game page in inactive. no discord either.

I might try my hand at a run soon, but am undecided as I didn't like the game enough to grind out a great run.

so my question: Should I let the others know about this skip, or keep it to myself until I decide if I am going to run the game?

Netherlands

That's up to you, you aren't obligated to share every find ^^ But it is highly appreciated by the community. Having more glitches and breaking the game more, is a trigger for people to run a game. Also, you get credits for finding a skip.

I found a glitch in MySims, really useless at the beginning, but with the help of @MelonSlice we could find a way how you can save ~20 seconds with this glitch. And still looking for more. I think this is one of the greatest part of speedrunning in my opinion ^^ Having fun and talking about experience, findings etc.

the idea is if I share it before I run, I might not get the best time using the skip. this is a hobby that is some what competitive. why give someone else the trick to beat me with. especially before I get to use it!?!?! If I had zero intention of running the game, I would have posted it without question. However, I am on the fence about running it. If the game was active, I would have posted it, first thing to keep the excitment up. but, alas, it is currently a dead game. so what harm is there in keeping my strat MY strat? at least for now?

I am currently trying to test it out to see if it can be repeated or if it was a wierd circumstance.

but I thought the topic was interesting one in general. If you find something, are you expected to share?

Putting a video up is sharing. Only by sharing can you submit a time and show off your skills. Which is why I'm planning to stream one day and show some stuff, like my full regen team on Pokemon Showdown which made four people rage quit.

There's no speedrunning police gonna come arrest you or anything, but....yes, you should share your findings. I'd say it's common courtesy. If you keep stuff to yourself -- particularly if it's not obvious just from looking at a video how it's done -- that's really kind of a selfish thing to do, and I wouldn't want anyone like that to be a part of any community I'm in. I don't know why you care about doing the first run that includes the trick. If you're WR level in the game and do a good run, it'll be WR anyway. If you're not, it'll be beaten in 2 minutes and then what's the point. Unless people actually care about how many former WR's they have (caring how many current they have is silly enough in my book) and even if they're super-hollow like this. If you're 4 minutes off WR and find a skip that saves 5 minutes, you're still gonna be 4 minutes off WR when the dust settles.

I'm sorry to be so blunt but the fact that you're even asking this kind of blows me away. Do you want to just be a loner? Community is the best part of speedrunning.

@EmeraldAly thanks for the input. The game in question has no community. 3 runs, no forum posts, no discord.(edit) and they have not even been online in 20 days (edit) so who am I keeping it from? and being the first one to do the trick is not important. but as a hobby where we want to go fast, If I decide to grind out WR pace and then do the skip then it would not be "hollow" as you said.

as my previous post mentioned, the game is not active.

and it is not really about whether or not to share, but more like when to share. make a first post on a dead game telling nobody about a skip in a game that isn't played? If i am not going to run it sure. but if I am going to spend my weekend grinding the game, is it fair to keep it until after?

I do not mean to sound argumentative. I just like seeing peoples opinions.

Just because there has not been a run uploaded in a few months does not mean the game is dead, nor does any game require a discord. Many games have people playing them trying to get better offline and there isnt much point in uploading a new run unless you better your time. If you care so much about having found this skip, record a run claim the WR.

Germany

I guess it is up to the game community, but if you don't share how it works, how is anyone able to tell if it is a legit skip and not some hack or modification of the game? So if your run needs to be verified, then you probably would have to share it after you submit your run anyway.

all right, you all win. LoL.

I posted it in the game forum. thanks for the discussion!

I can see the fun in finding something and being the only one who knows it and then developing it for a bit, but keep in mind that once you submit a run that breaks a category due to the discovery everyone who wants to do it in the future will want to emulate what you did and watch your submission. In that sense I think it's fine to feel good about the discovery, have that moment where it nets you WR and then be ready for someone who potentially runs it faster to add it to their game. Just because no one really runs it NOW doesn't mean someone may want to run it eventually and get really good at it... now if you're talking do everything in your power to keep it under wraps and make it difficult to understand how to replicate on purpose in your submission that feels kinda scummy. Really and the historian in me says it's always nice to document these things, but that I can settle on being a me thing.

Just my two cents.

@BearOnStilts that was exactly what I was meaning. I might spend my next 2 days off grinding a good time in the game. so is it ok to keep this find to meself until then? It was never keep this secrect to myself for all of time mwhahahaha. But more of when is it considered bad form. what if I don't run it for a week? 2 weeks? a month or two?

of course as soon as it is done or seen it is going to be a thing. But just how long do I have until I am being selfish?

haha. I like to analyse stuff like this.

Valhalla

Other than time sensitive things like sniping big marathon submissions with your WR that you got off a new strat, I don't really see the point.

And you won't make ANY friends doing that shit.

I've seen people hold back how a trick is done before and it wastes everyone's time. I mean, once you post a run with said trick someone will at least attempt to replicate it. So even if they don't understand what is happening, they could still perform, so was holding back that find really worth it?

Hell I've found things in games that make WR free and I've shared those things without ever implementing them lmao

Hey, just wanted to put my two cents into this conversation

I'm all for sharing. As the saying goes, sharing is caring. However, it doesn't hurt to look at the flip side. Say you tried your ass off in order to look for skips in a game and you actually manage to find one(granted, in this context, it doesn't sound like you worked very hard to find it, given the "finished a game casually" and the "accidentally skipped something"). I think it's fairly reasonable to want to claim it as your own intellectual property in more ways than just being credited with the finding. It'd be like incorporating it into your own "skill" in a speedrun. If you think about it, performing an action is never simply based on your skill at that particular instance, it's an accumulation of all of the time and effort that you've put into it. So, why should someone else benefit from your hard work if they haven't put in the time as well?

It sounds like you're just desperate for someone to say "sure, go ahead, keep it to yourself." It's your life, do whatever you want to do, but I'm not gonna be that person.

Scotland

I love sharing stuff I love talking to people and getting them involved it is really cool to see people excited or people all trying to find out how to make it work the best etc, I am a very chatty person too ^^ but yeah I love to share. I wouldn't even mind sharing stuff on games I don't run if it helped them cut down the time :D but I also have the mind set I don't care about getting WR it is nice but it is so much more fun to play games and see how fast I can do it, its exciting to see wr getting broke even my own it is like the best feeling, seeing the time go down or seeing some one getting a PB just so cool. I love helping out the community if I can :3

As @Seydie said she found something in mysims and we discussed it to try and make it more consistent etc I don't even run the wii version yet but I wanted to help and I think I did a bit I hope :) but she put in a lot of work, by working together the glitch became more consistent which is awesome so hopefully more people can use it now. Then we were recently testing out this void thing in the mysims ds and even though she doesn't run the ds one she helped out which was awesome she made a post asking the speed running community as a whole and even though we couldn't find a way to use it, only by everyone involved has it gotten to the point it has :D and because of that post if we find another oob glitch in another game we kind of know what to look for to see if we can use it. All thanks to the community.

(sorry for the long post) :)

The community is awesome

You don't HAVE to share at all, it's your discovery, but honestly i don't get what you're actually going to achieve by holding it back.

If you wait a month to do the run, and it's not an active game anyway, you've probably bought yourself a record (assuming you can keep the pace for the rest of the game). But if it's a game that anyone cares about (and really this forum has taught me there are very few games that no one cares about) then they'll see it and figure it out themselves and beat you if they're better. Or maybe they'll see it and post about it anyway, then maybe that skip with reignite the activity of the game. Then your skip will be responsible for that activity, except you didn't share it, so no one is giving you credit for it, they're giving it to the guy who posted it and the people who helped develop it to its best.

Personally I'd like to have helped the community and made a bit if a difference to the way a game is run if I was able to. This will only buy you a record temporarily unless you're already good at the game or no one cares.

All that said if you're super competitive (I'm not going to judge if that's the case, fair enough) then keep it to yourself and gamble no one figures it out. Personally one of my favourite things about this community is that despite it's competitive nature it's equally about helping each other as it is being the best. And being the best is only achieved by actually being the best, not having a trick no one else knows.

Personally when I find skips I can't share them quickly enough, don't wanna risk someone else finding it too and posting first haha
