I would like a bit of advice.

Hello! I hope your day is going well. I'm wanting to start running Mario 64, but I need some advice on where to start. As far as versions of the game, I have the Japanese version on original hardware, and the North American version on Wii Virtual Console. For controllers, on N64 I have an original, and a Superpad 64. For VC I have a GameCube controller. I was thinking about starting with a 16 star run. Which version of the game should I start running? And what would be some good guides to start with?

Well that's rude of them

United States

People respect console players more than VC, Although VC saves the most time. Watch Simply's Tutorials, Use the SM64 Guides here and be prepared for a bumpy ride

(If you want to eventually get to 120/70 I suggest not starting with 16 star since it focuses on tricks rather than movement)

No one will call you retarded (at least, not solely on the basis of playing on vc) so don't worry about that. Almost all the competition and optimization for this game has been done on n64, so since you already have the means, I would say play on n64. Having a gameshark and expansion pak is also helpful too.

I do have an expansion pak, but what does a Gameshark help with?

This game has a lot of gameshark codes that are useful for practicing. There's also a practice rom you can use with everdrive or emulator.
