it’s way harder to do overflows on Windows, and you can’t do mad dummy skip. it’s easier to do overflows on 1.001 Linux, and you can do mad dummy skip.

comparing 1.0, 1.001 windows, and 1.001 linux, 1.001 windows is by far the slowest, as it has neither the exclusive timesaves found in 1.0, nor the better input system or mad dummy skip found in 1.001 linux.

1.0 has glitches that end up beating 1.001 windows by roughly 8 seconds over the course of a neutral run. they have the same input system where if youre holding a key, lets say z, and try to also hold a key that happens to do the same action, in this case, enter, only the z press will register, as when enter is pressed nothing happens due to z still being held. you have to release z before you can press enter the frame after, which makes certain tricks, especially overflows, much more difficult then they have to be.

1.001 linux was at one point, theoretically, the same speed as 1.001 windows. The only difference being that the input systems was improved where z and enter, even if they perform the same action, are counted as separate keys. so what this means is if z was pressed and held, and while it was held, you pressed enter, both keys would register just fine. this doesn't really matter for 99% of the game in a perfect setting, but it makes mashing and overflows much easier and more lenient, so it became the default, so people would sacrifice 8-ish seconds over a neutral run in exchange for better mashing and more consistent overflows, which was faster for most human players unless they just happened to be good at 1.0 overflows.

However, last year, in late February 2021, it was discovered by Colinator that a setup that a well known runner, taser and glitchhunter named oceanbagel tried previously to skip the mad dummy was possible, BUT it was only possible on official linux 1.001 versions, with both the data.win and the runner (.exe) ran from the linux version. this was big, as this now meant that not only was 1.001 linux the fastest version of the 3, but it was also by far the most convenient, and that people could save roughly 2 full minutes over their previous pbs, and potentially more.
