Run Categories

Been thinking about learning this game as a speedrun. I played it as kid a little bit. Is there a possibility of a single game category? I'm not too great at long speedruns but a quicker category could help me learn the game.

Doing a single mission category isn't really comparable between runners, the mission you get is completely random. While one runner may get Mission A which takes 6min to beat, another runner may get Mission F which takes 10min to beat. Then you just have runners grinding resets for Mission A, which isn't fun for the runner or watcher. As far as I know there is no way to select a specific mission but if there is I would create an IL leaderboard for sure.

As it is, there is a lot of RNG even when it comes to doing Green Saber and The Force categories because again, the missions are random, so you may get the 5 shortest missions or the 5 longest missions. But at least those two categories have very clear end time goals.

Hopefully that helps or makes sense?

I guess that makes sense? But I don't see how having another category hurts. Games like Link's Awakening have several, including kinda silly ones like Map%. Either way I'm probably not going to run it seriously, but would love to watch this game get some love.

So it turns out there is a way to differentiate what mission you are on so I have created an IL leaderboard. I've also created two sub categories, one labeled New Game where you start from a fresh save file. The second is NG+, for lack of a better term and could be changed, where the player is allowed to use any and all power ups from the start. Power ups are Luke's green lightsaber, the Force and the Spirit Heart.

Hopefully this will satisfy the single mission runners out there? The order of missions, the planets' maps and other details are randomly generated but the goals and which planet a mission takes place on stays the same each time.

Sounds good! also how do we completely reset the game? I was taking a look around and it's locked me to the NG+ style of game. I would like to submit some runs of the longer categories but not sure how to reset the game to the start. I was looking through the files but didn't see anything. Do I need to completely delete the game and re download it?

Update on resetting the game: on W10 go to %appdata%\Local\VirtualStore\Windows Right click the YODESK.INI file and delete. Then reopen Yoda Stories

So I poked at it a bit, and you can "reset" your progression/save in the .ini file without having to do a full delete, so that the Combat Difficulty/World Size/Game Speed don't have to be reset every time you make a new attempt.

Just open the .ini in any text editor (Notepad works), and verify you have the following:

Terrain=1
Difficulty=1
GameSpeed=96
WorldSize=1

Also make sure there is nothing after "[GameData]", as that is the actual save history.

If you want to have the unlocks, you need to set the "Count" value to the following:

6 - Green Lightsaber
11 - The Force
16 - Spirit Heart

I have to do some additional testing to figure out exactly what the "[GameData]" information means, but i suspect this is tied to the map seeds. If anyone is willing to share their .ini files for testing, please let me know and I'll set up a Google Drive.

Oh this is interesting, I've just got a script that deleted the save on startup for those categories that require a fresh save.
