Emulators are banned because they cannot emulate the game properly. It most notably can run faster on Emulator.
Saying that though, it's not too difficult to set up an N64 to run the game :)
Emulation is banned due to extremely poor emulation. However, any officially release is allowed. :)
BizHawk is an emulator, therefore banned. Currently, the only accepted platforms are Nintendo 64 and the Wii U Virtual Console release
Ok, what about making an agreement and choose one emulator only for speedruning, and making a sub category for emulator runs only, this way, more runners will try to speedrun the game and share there times. I think this is the same as SM64 and Mega Man X2.
Emulators run too differently from the official releases of the game to be acceptable on the leaderboards, that's it.
The thing with SM64 is that an emulator run (If the emulator used is one that is accurate) is at least somewhat comparable to a console run of a similar time, hence why they were (a few months back at the very least) on the same leaderboard.
With DK64, that's not the case as there are several inaccuracies. Amongst other things, you save an automatic 10 seconds in Tiny Phase on emulator just from the intro cutscene being faster.
All of this combined together means that an emulator run would not be comparable enough to a console run of that time, regardless of whether it's on a separate leaderboard. As a result, we do not allow emulators.
Well, thanks for explaining, now everything is clear to me, when trying to emulate a game, it should be comparable to the original hardware in order to qualify it for leaderboards.
After discussion over the last couple months and a vote amongst community members and the leaderboard moderators, runs on different consoles have been split and are now listed separately under different tabs. The decision included a near-supermajority vote to list the fastest console by default on a
